ACT ONE
EXT. 4247 MAPLEWOOD DRIVE – MORNING
CLOSE-UP on the 4247 yard sign and then PULL BACK for FULL SHOT of the exterior and yard of the home of Lee and Amanda Stetson.
INT. KITCHEN – MORNING
A chaotic early morning breakfast scene at the Stetson-King residence. Everyone is in various stages of dress. The family is dashing about getting ready for either work or school. JAMIE is sitting down at the corner eating a bowl of cereal and reading a school book. DOTTY appears to be preparing a roast for dinner. AMANDA is making the boys’ sack lunches.
AMANDA
(hollering)
Phillip Joseph King, hurry up or you are going to miss the bus.
PHILLIP (O.C.)
I’ll be down in a minute.
JAMIE
He’s just taking extra time in front of the mirror this morning to impress Wendy Cross.
AMANDA
Whatever happened to Amy Parker?
DOTTY
She was last week. Even I know that.
AMANDA
Whatever happened to my little boy who would not let me drop him off at preschool without clinging to my skirt?
DOTTY
He became a teenager.
AMANDA
Lee-
LEE leans against the corner drinking a cup of coffee, while talking on the telephone.
LEE
(he mouths)
I’ll have a talk with him.
Amanda smiles at him.
Lee puts his finger to his ear, trying to block out all the commotion.
LEE
Just a second. Let me grab a piece of paper.
He moves closer to Amanda scanning the countertop looking for something to write with. Amanda is scraping the bottom of a peanut butter jar, but using her elbow, she points him toward a pad of paper.
AMANDA
Mother, did you happen to pick up more peanut butter when you were out grocery shopping?
DOTTY
Yes, I did, Dear. I even picked up a jar of the chunky peanut butter Lee likes.
AMANDA
(to Dotty)
Thank you, Mother.
(to Jamie)
Jamie, did you want grape or strawberry jelly today?
JAMIE
Strawberry.
Lee grabs a notebook and pen. Amanda has somehow gotten all twisted up with the phone cord. Lee unravels it. When she smiles at him, he leans down and kisses her on the lips.
Jamie rolls his eyes. Lee winks at her.
JAMIE
(teasing)
Gross.
AMANDA
(blushing slightly; she puts her arm around Jamie)
Someday you will understand.
(she tweaks his nose)
Now, did you remember to take out the trash?
JAMIE
Yes, Mom.
LEE
Go ahead, Billy.
He writes down something on the paper.
LEE
Yes, I got it.
He hands Amanda the piece of paper with an address written on it. Covering the phone, he mouths. . .
LEE (continued)
Billy wants us to meet him at this address this morning.
Lee checks his watch to see what time it is.
LEE (continued)
We can be there in about twenty minutes.
(beat)
Okay. Bye.
Lee hangs up the phone. PHILLIP suddenly appears at his side and gives him a pleading look.
PHILLIP
Are you leaving now?
(beat)
Can I, please?
Lee chuckles, then reaches into his pocket and hands Phillip a set of keys.
Excited, Phillip exits. This action grabs Amanda’s attention.
AMANDA
What is Phillip doing?
Lee doesn’t say anything, but grabs a piece of toast off a plate on the counter. We hear the roar of the Corvette ENGINE.
AMANDA (continued)
You didn’t?
(beat)
You taught him how to back-up? He’s not even fifteen yet, Lee.
LEE
He will be in a few more weeks. And he’s only backing up the car. He’s not really driving it.
Amanda shakes her head, giving him a “you are asking for it” look.
AMANDA
Well, you do realize today is trash day?
CLOSE ON JAMIE
He smirks.
CLOSE ON LEE
Lee grimaces, quickly puts down his coffee mug, and then dashes out of the kitchen.
INT. FOYER – FRONT DOOR
Lee throws open the front door.
LEE
Phillip, wait!
Amanda is standing next to Lee.
There is a loud CRASH.
Lee standing at the door has a pained expression on his face. Off Lee’s expression, we. . .
CUT TO
EXT. ELITE GYMNASTICS CENTER (ESTABLISHING) – DAY
CAMERA focuses on a reader board outside a gymnastics gymnasium in an upscale neighborhood of Arlington, Virginia. Then the CAMERA ZOOMS onto a banner above the entrance reading; "Elite Gymnastics Center welcomes Pavel Kuznetzov."
INT. ELITE GYMNASTICS CENTER – DAY
FULL SHOT
It is early afternoon and the gym is full of male and female gymnasts practicing routines; some are on high bars, uneven bars, trampolines, and parallel bars. There are a few spectators in the stands; most of them are paying very little attention to the action on the floor. The CAMERA PANS over to the floor and focuses on a young man; he is PAVEL KUZNETZOV, a 16-year-old Russian gymnast. He’s built like a typical gymnast, a little on the small size, but well developed arms, shoulders, and legs. He is dressed in a leotard and black shorts, and bare-foot. Pavel steps out onto the mat and then salutes the judges (note: there is no one sitting in the judges table, as this is a practice). He then completes his floor exercise and gives a salute to the judges and audience. It appears to be a flawless routine. He hops off the mat and heads toward his coach. KONSTANTINE FILLPOV is in his early 30s, relatively good-looking, muscular, but he wears a frown.
KONSTANTINE
Vy oblazhalis’— sdelayte eto snova.
(Translated: You screwed up – do it again).
PAVEL
Da.
Slightly dejected, Pavel walks back to the gymnastics floor.
The CAMERA then pans over to the gym doors, Lee and Amanda walk in.
AMANDA
Why do you think Billy wanted to meet us here?
LEE
I don’t know.
He glances around the room and sees BILLY MELROSE sitting in the stands.
LEE (continued)
I see him over there in the bleachers. Let’s go find out, shall we?
Lee and Amanda walk over to join him. Then Lee helps Amanda climb the bleachers.
TRACKING SHOT
INT. ELITE GYMNASTICS CENTER – STANDS
Billy sees his two agents walking toward him.
BILLY
Lee, Amanda, take a seat.
Amanda and Lee both sit down in the bleacher seats behind Billy.
LEE
Strange place for a meet, Billy.
Billy gestures toward Pavel.
BILLY
Watch the young man on the floor.
The three agents watch Pavel do his routine again.
AMANDA
(to Lee; whisper)
He’s really good.
BACK ON PAVEL
He finishes his routine and raises his hand in salute.
BACK ON LEE, AMANDA, AND BILLY
LEE
Okay, Billy, what gives?
BILLY
Meet Pavel Kuznetzov, your new assignment.
Lee looks toward the direction Billy is pointing and sees he is gesturing toward the young gymnast they had just watched practice.
LEE
Now wait just a minute, babysitting is not in our job description.
AMANDA
What do you mean?
LEE
He thinks he is going to saddle us with this kid.
BILLY
Settle down, Scarecrow, and I will explain everything.
(beat)
Who said anything about babysitting? Pavel Kuznetzov is a rising gymnastics star. He’s probably the best, if not one of the top gymnasts in Russia right now, if not the world.
(another beat)
In three days there will be a special gymnastics showcase at the Kennedy Center, featuring gymnasts from around the world, including Pavel here. And since this is the first time Russia has agreed to compete since the boycotted Olympics of 1984 and our boycotting of the Moscow Olympics of 1980, the two countries have agreed to set aside our differences as a goodwill gesture.
(another beat)
Therefore, you two will be in charge of his security while he is in town.
LEE
(whining)
Isn’t that the State Department’s duty?
BILLY
Yes, normally. However, this is an important assignment.
LEE
(under his breath)
It always is.
BILLY
(ignoring Lee)
It appears you two were requested specifically for this assignment by Isaac Petrovich.
LEE
Isaac Petrovich? That son of a--
AMANDA
Lee!
LEE
This is his revenge for all those times I bested him.
Billy shrugs.
BILLY
Maybe. However, you can understand the consequences if anything were to happen to Pavel Kuznetzov while he was in the United States.
Both Lee and Amanda nod their heads, even though it is obvious Lee is less than thrilled about this assignment.
BILLY (continued)
Okay, now that that is settled. Shall we go meet Pavel?
TRACKING SHOT
Lee, Amanda and Billy head toward Pavel and his coach, who are now standing near the chalk holder. Pavel has changed into a warm-up suit.
BILLY
Konstantine Fillpov?
KONSTANTINE
Yes. Billy Melrose, right?
He shakes Billy’s hand.
BILLY
I’d like to introduce Lee and Amanda Stetson.
Konstantine shakes Lee and Amanda’s hands.
KONSTANTINE
And may I present to you, Pavel Kuznetzov.
Pavel shakes everyone's hands.
PAVEL
(with heavy Russian accent)
Mr. Melrose. Mr. Stetson. Mrs. Stetson.
KONSTANTINE
(to Pavel)
Well, now that introductions are out of the way, why don’t you hit the showers?
PAVEL
Da.
Pavel exits.
BILLY
I need to be getting back to the office myself.
(beat)
Mr. Fillpov.
(to Lee and Amanda)
Lee, Amanda, see you two later.
Billy exits.
Konstantine takes out a piece of paper from a notebook he had near his gym bag.
KONSTANTINE
Moscow has prepared an itinerary for Pavel while he is in D.C. See that he sticks to it.
Amanda takes the paper from him.
AMANDA
Washington Monument, Jefferson Memorial, National Zoo, Museum of Science and Industry, White House – typical touristy things.
LEE
(slightly irritated)
And in crowded areas where anything could happen.
KONSTANTINE
It is what Moscow has requested and what they think Pavel would like.
(beat)
Pavel is very important to us. Should any harm come to him, I’m sure Moscow will hold you personally responsible.
Konstantine leaves.
ON LEE AND AMANDA
They exchange looks.
AMANDA
Sounds like a threat.
LEE
Yeah. And I think we should treat it as such.
QUICK CUT
EXT. OFFICE BUILDING – FULL SHOT – NIGHT
TO ESTABLISH a nice office building along Embassy Row in Washington, D.C.
INT. OFFICE – NIGHT
ON SERGEI who is sitting behind a desk, studying a dossier.
SERGEI EVANOFF is a dapperly dressed, formidable figure in his late 40s. He speaks with a Russian accent.
There is a KNOCK on the door.
SERGEI
Come in.
A man walks into the room and, without looking up, Sergei addresses him.
SERGEI
Good evening, Ivan.
IVAN EVANOFF is Sergei’s slightly younger brother, a towering figure and professional hit man. He also speaks in a Russian accent.
IVAN
You sent for me?
SERGEI
Yes, Ivan. I need your help.
IVAN
And what would that be?
SERGEI
I need for you to arrange one of our “special” accidents.
He takes a picture out of the dossier and hands it to Ivan.
ON PHOTO
Picture of Pavel Kuznetzov.
BACK TO SCENE
SERGEI (continued)
This time for Pavel Kuznetzov.
(beat)
As a special treat, I’ve heard Lee Stetson, codename Scarecrow, is personally protecting him. I was able to obtain a copy of Pavel’s itinerary and they will be taking him to places out in the open.
IVAN
There’s almost no thrill in that – it will be too easy.
SERGEI
Whatever you need to do to make it entertaining then, but make sure the accident is fatal.
IVAN
And if Stetson gets in my way?
SERGEI
Kill him, too.
CLOSE ON IVAN. He smiles.
CUT TO
EXT. WASHINGTON MALL – DAY
Amanda and Pavel are walking along the pathway. Lee is following a ways back. He is sullen, quiet.
At that very moment, they see a homeless man holding a paper cup, begging for money.
PAVEL
This is the difference between our two counties. Communism is much better. In Moscow you would never see a man living in the streets begging.
LEE
(under breath)
No, just long lines of people waiting for a loaf of bread.
AMANDA
(changing the subject)
So what did you think of the National History Museum?
PAVEL
It was all right, but we have museums in Moscow that are more impressive. Our history is more interesting, too.
(beat)
Mr. Stetson does not appear to like me very much or is it teenagers in general?
AMANDA
Mr. Stetson, I mean Lee, doesn’t dislike you. And he is a great father to our boys.
PAVEL
You have children?
AMANDA
Yes, two boys. Phillip, who is almost fifteen, and Jamie, who just turned thirteen.
(beat)
Well, um, let’s see. Next on the list is the National Air and Space Museum.
Pavel suddenly stops and stomps his foot.
PAVEL
No.
Amanda stops.
AMANDA
No?
PAVEL
(sigh)
No, this is boring.
(beat)
Is this how you would spend time with your sons? No?
AMANDA
Actually, I have been with the boys several times to visit the museums and monuments. However, now that they are older, I believe you are correct, they would probably think this was a drag.
PAVEL
I would like to meet your sons.
Amanda looks over at Lee.
AMANDA
We’ll see.
PAVEL
What do they like to do?
AMANDA
Well, they both like playing video games and riding skateboards.
PAVEL
Then I would like to do those things, too.
LEE
A-man-da.
AMANDA
Lee, maybe we can find something fun for a teenage boy to do.
(beat)
How about we start with some good-old American fast food?
PAVEL
Fast food?
AMANDA
Hamburgers and shakes.
PAVEL
What’s a shake?
AMANDA
Come on, we’ll show you.
She puts her arm around Pavel and leads the way.
Lee shakes his head, but follows his wife.
CUT TO
EXT. HAMBURGER STAND – DAY
We find Lee, Amanda, and Pavel eating hamburgers and drinking shakes.
PAVEL
I think I have decided I like hamburgers.
He takes another bite.
PAVEL (continued)
(with mouth full)
Do Americas eat like this all the time?
AMANDA
Um, no.
PAVEL
You know, I’m finding your country not as bad as I was told it would be.
AMANDA
What do you mean?
PAVEL
We were told all Americans are cowboys and everyone carries guns.
LEE
Russian propaganda.
Pavel shrugs.
PAVEL
Maybe. But so far I like all I have seen.
AMANDA
And what do you do for fun, Pavel?
PAVEL
No time for fun. Must practice. Get ready for Olympics.
AMANDA
Well, I’m sure you must do things with your family, right? Tell me about your family.
PAVEL
I don’t live at home. Been living with Konstantine for years now. I do have a mother and a baby sister though, but I don’t get to see them very often.
AMANDA
I’m sorry.
(beat)
What about your father?
PAVEL
He died in Afghanistan.
AMANDA
Oh, I’m sorry, Pavel. I didn’t mean to bring up painful memories.
Pavel shrugs. There is an awkward silence for a moment.
PAVEL (continued)
Can we go skate-
He struggles for the right word.
AMANDA
(finishing for him)
Skateboarding.
She looks over at Lee who rolls his eyes.
CUT TO
EXT. SKATEBOARD PARK – DAY
ON PAVEL who appears to be having a great time, riding a skateboard. He has on knee and elbow pads. He is talking with some boys in the park and then waves to Lee and Amanda.
Lee and Amanda are sitting on a bench in the background.
CAMERA ZOOMS TO THEM.
AMANDA
He’s having the time of his life.
LEE
Yes, but if Pavel gets hurt, Konstantine’s going to kill us.
AMANDA
Oh, Lee, he’s not going to get hurt! But, maybe we should get going.
(beat; hollers at Pavel)
Pavel, it’s time to go.
ON PAVEL
He looks less than thrilled, but hands the skateboard and pads back to one of the boys he met at the park, and then waves goodbye. He then walks over to Lee and Amanda.
PAVEL
Must we go now?
AMANDA
Yes, you need to go to the gym for practice.
PAVEL
Practice, practice, practice. All the time practice.
He looks across the park and sees a Hot Dog Vendor.
PAVEL (continued)
Besides, I’m hungry.
AMANDA
Hungry? You just ate two hamburgers, large fries, and a chocolate shake less than two hours ago.
Pavel shrugs.
PAVEL
I would like a dog with the works.
AMANDA
All right.
She nudges Lee. He takes out his wallet and hands Pavel a five-dollar bill.
AMANDA
I’ll go with you.
Amanda and Pavel step into the crosswalk to walk across the street.
CAMERA ZOOMS ON CAR PARKED ALONG THE CURB
INT. CAR – DAY
Ivan is sitting inside the car. His eyes are focused on Pavel and Amanda.
ON IGNITION
Ivan turns the key. The engine ROARS. He then hits the gas and goes speeding through the crosswalk.
Lee sees this happening all in slow motion.
LEE
Amanda!
He then runs into the crosswalk and shoves Amanda and Pavel out of the path of the speeding car. Lee then tucks and rolls, but gets a glancing blow from the cars fender. He falls and bumps his head on the payment.
Amanda rushes up to him and kneels down beside him.
AMANDA
Lee!
CLOSE ON LEE
He is moving, but not very quickly; and we. . .
END OF ACT ONE
ACT TWO
EXT. AGENCY – GEORGETOWN ENTRANCE – LATER THAT AFTERNOON
CLOSE UP on IFF sign the Camera PULLS AWAY for FULL SHOT.
INT. AGENCY – BILLY’S OFFICE – DAY
Billy is sitting on the edge of his desk and Lee is leaning against the window that looks out toward the bullpen.
BILLY
So you think it was deliberate?
Lee starts to rake his hand through his hair, but grimaces in pain.
LEE
I can’t be positive, but it sure looked that way.
BILLY
Did either you or Amanda get a plate number?
LEE
Amanda was only able to get a partial.
BILLY
Run a check on it.
LEE
Already on it.
BILLY
Good. And how’s the head?
LEE
I’ll live.
Billy nods his head.
BILLY
Where is Amanda? Is she okay?
LEE
She’s a little shaken, but she’s down at the gym with Pavel.
BILLY
And how are Pavel and Amanda getting along?
LEE
You know Amanda, she’s practically adopted him.
Billy laughs.
BILLY
I bet the boy could do with some of Amanda’s mothering.
(beat)
Maybe it would be best if you and Amanda keep a closer eye on him.
LEE
Okay. You let me know if you find out anything about that car that almost ran down my wife.
BILLY
Will do, Lee.
Billy reaches toward his phone and dials a number as Lee exits Billy’s office.
CUT TO
EXT. OFFICE BUILDING – FULL SHOT – DAY
INT. OFFICE – DAY
Sergei is sitting down at his desk with Ivan in a chair right across from him. In Ivan’s lap is a large briefcase.
IVAN
I don’t know what happened. I had them dead to rights.
SERGEI
I am not interested in excuses, Ivan. We can’t afford mistakes.
(beat)
Can they trace the car?
IVAN
No.
Sergei stands up and paces the room.
SERGEI
Time is running out. Pavel is only going to be in the United States a couple more days.
IVAN
Don’t worry. This time I wouldn't miss.
He opens the briefcase.
CLOSE ON a high powered rifle, broken down, inside the case.
CLOSE ON Sergei, as he smiles.
CUT TO
EXT. ELITE GYMNASTICS CENTER – DAY
Lee, driving the Wagoneer, pulls into a parking space, steps out of the vehicle and walks in through the front door.
INT. ELITE GYMNASTICS CENTER – DAY
Lee walks into the gym; he spies his wife sitting in the stands and goes to join her.
TRACKING SHOT on Lee
Lee sits down next to Amanda.
LEE
How’s it going?
Amanda puts her finger to her lip.
AMANDA
Shush. He’s about to do the high bar. This is one of my favorite events to watch when the Olympics are on TV.
CAMERA FOCUSES ON THE FLOOR where Pavel is doing a high bar routine. During the routine, he executes a series of continuous swings, multiple release moves with re-grasps of the bar, followed by a high flying dismount with several twists. He sticks the landing.
BACK ON LEE AND AMANDA
Amanda is clapping.
LEE
I have to admit. He is good.
AMANDA
Are we going to tell Konstantine about the near miss?
LEE
I’d rather not until we hear back from Billy. No reason to alarm anyone until we have all the facts.
Pavel and Konstantine come into view as they walk toward Lee and Amanda. Pavel has changed into his warm-up clothes.
KONSTANTINE
Thank you for getting him to the gym on time. I trust there were no problems.
AMANDA
Nothing worth mentioning.
Pavel looks over at her with a confused expression on his face.
KONSTANTINE
You will make sure he gets back to the hotel safely, no?
AMANDA
No. I mean, yes. We will make sure he gets back to the hotel.
KONSTANTINE
Well, then, I shall see you all tomorrow at 7:00 am.
LEE
(under breath)
7:00 am? On a Saturday? What did I do to deserve this assignment?
Amanda hits him in the solar plexus.
LEE
Oof.
Pavel watches this exchange and then chuckles.
Konstantine exits.
A moment later, Lee, Amanda and Pavel exit out of the gym doors and then out the entrance door.
EXT. ELITE GYMNASTICS – WIDE – DAY
They exit out the door and walk through the front courtyard, headed toward the parking lot.
ANGLE ACROSS THE STREET – MOVIE THEATER – MARQUEE
Marquee reads “Planes, Trains and Automobiles. John Candy. Steve Martin.”
EXT. MOVIE THEATER – ROOFTOP
Ivan is on a movie theater rooftop assembling a high-powered rifle, out of the view of people on the street down below.
PARKING LOT
Lee, Amanda, and Pavel walk toward the Wagoneer.
PAVEL
What happened earlier?
AMANDA
(feigning ignorance)
Earlier?
PAVEL
Yes, with the car.
AMANDA
Yeah. Well. You see.
She looks over at Lee for help.
ANGLE – ROOFTOP
SEVERAL TIGHT CUTS of the automatic weapon being assembled.
PARKING LOT
LEE
Most likely a driver who did not have his eyes on the road.
ANGLE – ACROSS THE STREET – ROOFTOP
Ivan lifts an assembled rifle, looks through a high-powered scope.
PARKING LOT
PAVEL
You saved my life, Mr. Stetson.
He goes to shake Lee’s hand.
LEE
Umm-
TIGHT ON Ivan’s trigger finger as it curls around the trigger.
ON AMANDA
Watches Lee’s discomfort for a second, but Lee’s discomfort sharpens Amanda’s uneasy feeling and she takes a quick look around including the rooftop of the movie theater; she sees movement.
AMANDA
Lee! Look out!
She knocks Pavel out of the way and shields him. Lee reflexively dives in front of the Wagoneer and uses it for cover. A shot is FIRED. It ricochets off the building. A second SHOT is heard and this one shatters the back window of the Wagoneer.
ON WAGONEER
Pavel screams.
ON LEE
He draws his gun. Crouching down, he checks on Amanda and Pavel.
PARKING LOT
LEE
Are you all right?
AMANDA
Yes, we are fine.
LEE
Cover me. Then call for back-up.
(beat)
Stay with Pavel.
AMANDA
Right.
(beat)
Be careful.
Lee gives a brief nod.
ON AMANDA
She draws her gun and covers Lee.
PAVEL
I guess it is true; everyone in America does carry a gun.
Amanda does not answer as her focus is still on Lee and the shooter on the rooftop.
ON LEE
He runs toward the office building where the shooter had been and sees an alleyway alongside the office building. He runs toward it.
LEE’S POV
He approaches the alley cautiously. He is about to round the corner when a car comes screaming out of the alleyway.
ANGLE
Lee barely has time to jump out of the way of the speeding car before being run over. He fires two SHOTS after the car as it skids out into the street and takes off burning rubber.
ON AMANDA
She rushes up to Lee and he pulls her into a warm embrace. They hug; we. . .
END OF ACT TWO
ACT THREE
EXT. AGENCY GEORGETOWN ENTRANCE – EARLY EVENING
FULL SHOT OF THE AGENCY then the camera FOCUSES on the upper window of the building.
INT. Q-BUREAU – EARLY EVENING
Lee and Amanda are both sitting at their desks. There is a brief KNOCK at the door and Billy steps in.
BILLY
I got the information on the partial plate.
LEE
And?
BILLY
We tracked down the car and the owner. And just as you expected, the car was reported stolen 48-hours ago.
AMANDA
So we have nothing to go on.
BILLY
Appears to be the case, Amanda. However, we do have a BOLO out for the car, but I am sure it has been discarded already. If we find it, we might be lucky to find some fingerprints.
LEE
I doubt it. These are pros we are talking about.
BILLY
Did either of you have any other information on the shooter?
LEE
No, just the vague description we already put into our report.
Billy nods his head.
BILLY
That’s what I thought.
(beat)
By the way, where is Pavel?
LEE
Francine took him to the lunchroom to get him something to eat.
AMANDA
We are waiting for Leatherneck to replace the back window of the Wagoneer and take a couple of slugs out of the seats, before we head home. But what are we going to do with Pavel?
BILLY
Well, I could put him in a safehouse, until the showcase.
AMANDA
No, don’t do that. He could come home with us.
LEE
A-man-da.
BILLY
Are you sure?
AMANDA
What’s another teenage mouth to feed? I’m sure it will be no bother.
LEE
(a little louder)
A-man-da!
AMANDA
Lee, he’s got no place to go. The hotel is not safe and no one will know he is with us.
(beat)
I mean what could happen?
Lee rolls his eyes and then shakes his head.
BILLY
Thanks, Lee and Amanda. I’ll have agents at your place within the hour just to be on the safe side.
AMANDA
Thank you, Sir.
Billy exits.
Lee goes around to the front of his desk, sits on the edge, and crosses his arms in front of his chest. He looks at Amanda.
CLOSE on Amanda.
AMANDA
How are we going to explain this to Mother?
CLOSE on Lee as he points to himself and then shakes his head “no”, points his finger at Amanda, and we. . .
EXT. 4247 MAPLEWOOD DRIVE – EARLY EVENING
The camera zooms on the Corvette parked next to the curb out in front of the house.
INT. STETSON-KING HOUSE - KITCHEN – EARLY EVENING
Dotty is preparing a garden salad for the family for dinner when Amanda enters the kitchen.
Dotty is surprised to see Amanda and she glances at the clock on the wall.
DOTTY
Amanda. You’re home early.
(brief second of panic)
Is everything all right? Where’s Lee?
AMANDA
Lee's fine. He'll be home in a few minutes.
(beat)
Where are the boys?
DOTTY
They are out with some friends playing basketball. Why, is something wrong?
Dotty glances around the room.
DOTTY (continued)
(almost a whisper)
Does this have something to do with your job?
AMANDA
Funny you should ask. . .
(beat)
Actually, we have a young man who will be staying with us for a couple of days.
Dotty quirks an eyebrow.
DOTTY
That’s nice. Tell me about him.
AMANDA
Well, he’s 16. He’s athletic. He’s basically a typical teenager, who needs a place to stay. . .
(under her breath)
Until he goes back to Russia.
DOTTY
Are you volunteering with the Big Sister program again?
AMANDA
Umm?
DOTTY
You remember, young Dillinger? Alexi. The one the feds had in protective custody?
(realization)
Wait a minute! You were on the job even back then, weren’t you?
AMANDA
Yes, Mother. That was one of the early cases Lee and I worked on together.
Dotty shakes her head.
DOTTY
Russia, huh?
(beat)
Are we safe?
AMANDA
Perfectly.
DOTTY
Is he some sort of communist? KGB agent?
AMANDA
No, Mother. Really, he’s just a gymnast who needs a place to stay for a day or two.
DOTTY
So can we expect a diaper service truck, a dry cleaning truck, or a cable truck parked outside?
AMANDA
I’m not sure which yet. But yes, there will be agents watching the house.
DOTTY
What a dangerous world you have gotten yourself into, Missy.
AMANDA
Mother-
DOTTY
(interrupting)
Don’t “Mother” me. Although, seeing you and Lee together I can certainly understand why.
AMANDA
Lee wasn’t the reason I became involved with the Agency.
DOTTY
Oh?
AMANDA
However, he certainly became a perk.
Dotty clears her throat, understanding what Amanda is too embarrassed to say. Amanda blushes.
QUICK CUT
INT. 4247 MAPLEWOOD DRIVE – DINING ROOM – EVENING
Everyone is gathered around the dining room table. Dinner is done and plates are empty.
PAVEL
Thanks Mrs. West for dinner. I’ve never had pot roast before. It was very good.
DOTTY
You’re welcome, Pavel.
(beat)
Is everyone ready for dessert?
PHILLIP/JAMIE
(unison)
Me!
Dotty stands up.
DOTTY
Okay, six dessert plates and chocolate cake coming up.
PAVEL
Do you need any help?
DOTTY
Thank you for the offer, but you are our guest. Sit. I’ll be right back with dessert.
Dotty exits toward the kitchen.
JAMIE
Hey, Mom, after dessert, can you look at my essay on foreign policy?
PHILLIP
Dork.
AMANDA
Boys! We have company. Phillip, do not call your brother names. Jamie, I will be happy to look at your essay before I go to bed.
PHILLIP
(to Pavel)
Where do you go to school, Pavel?
PAVEL
I don’t go to school.
PHILLIP
Wow! Must be nice not having to go to school.
AMANDA
Phillip!
PAVEL
You are correct, Phillip, I do not go to school or what you would call a traditional school. However, I still have my studies. Back home I have a tutor who comes by the house every day. He makes me write essays on foreign policies, too.
JAMIE
For being a Russian you aren’t what I expected.
AMANDA
That’s what we get when we pre-judge someone.
JAMIE
I thought we were at war with Russia.
LEE
It's more like neither country trusts the other. Sort of like you don't trust Philip to not eat your cake.
PHILLIP
Hey!
PAVEL
I love your country.
(beat)
Maybe our countries can learn to live together.
AMANDA
I hope someday that’s true.
Dotty returns with dessert.
DOTTY
I brought ice cream, too.
ALL THREE BOYS
(unison)
Yay!
PAVEL
Again, I can’t thank you enough for dinner. Maybe tomorrow I can return the favor and cook for all you. I could make Okroshka.
DOTTY
Sounds delightful.
(beat)
What is it?
LEE
It’s a soup.
AMANDA
(teasing)
No borscht, right Lee?
Amanda stands up and Dotty dishes up the dessert for the family.
LEE
Yes, no borscht.
PAVEL
(confused)
What’s wrong with borscht?
DOTTY
I guess there’s a story behind that, isn’t there?
LEE
Later.
DOTTY
Later means never with you, Lee.
CLOSE ON LEE
He opens his mouth to protest, then closes it. Off Lee’s expression; we. . .
CUT TO
INT. STETSON-KING HOUSE – KITCHEN – EARLY MORNING (NEXT DAY)
Phillip rubbing the sleep from his eyes stumbles into the kitchen and nearly bumps into Pavel.
PHILLIP
Sorry about that.
PAVEL
No problem. I wasn’t watching what I was doing.
PHILLIP
You’re up early?
PAVEL
Actually, this is late for me. Back home I would already be at the gym.
PHILLIP
Even on a Sunday?
PAVEL
Yes, every day.
Phillip shrugs.
PHILLIP
Are you hungry? Mom and Lee usually sleep in on Sundays, but I could get you some cereal.
PAVEL
That would be nice.
Phillip gets down a couple of bowls, a box of Toastie-O’s, and grabs the milk from the refrigerator.
INT. FAMILY ROOM (A FEW MINUTES LATER)
On the coffee table are empty bowls and glasses of milk. Phillip and Pavel are playing Duck Hunt on a Nintendo Entertainment Center.
They are laughing, but keeping noise down as not to wake up the rest of the household.
PAVEL
I hate that laughing dog.
PHILLIP
Me, too.
Jamie then enters into the family room dressed in pajamas and bathrobe.
JAMIE
You should see how mad Lee gets playing this game. He says the game cheats.
PAVEL
Is this all you Americans do on a Sunday? No wonder why your country is so soft.
PHILLIP
Hey!
PAVEL
I did not mean to insult you. I’m just bored playing video games.
(beat)
I apologize.
PHILLIP
Apology accepted.
JAMIE
No, we like to do other things. Soccer, baseball, basketball. I’m into photography and Phillip, here, is into girls.
PHILLIP
Shut up, Dweeb.
PAVEL
Excuse me, what is dweeb?
PHILLIP
Umm? You explain it, Nerd.
JAMIE
Boring. Someone who is usually studious, socially inept.
Pavel shrugs.
PAVEL
And this is bad?
JAMIE
No, not really. Phillip and I just have different personalities and we sometime fight with each other.
(beat)
Don’t you ever fight with your sister?
PAVEL
I don’t get to see her often, but I guess she can get on my nerves from time to time.
PHILLIP
Not bad, Pavel. We’ll have you Americanized in no time.
PAVEL
Yes, as American as baseball, hot dogs, apple pie, and Chevrolet.
JAMIE
That’s the spirit.
PAVEL
But I’m still bored.
(beat)
Do you think we can go outside for a while? Maybe go back to the skate park?
JAMIE
Umm, I don’t know? Mom and Lee wouldn’t like it. Maybe we should wake them and ask them if we can?
PAVEL
(to Phillip)
What was that word again?
PHILLIP
Dweeb.
JAMIE
I am not!
PHILLIP
Prove it!
Jamie appears to be contemplating the situation.
PHILLIP (continued)
I dare you.
JAMIE
Fine. But we leave Mom and Lee a note.
PHILLIP
I can live with that.
JAMIE
And how are we going to get past the babysitters?
PHILLIP
Just leave that to me, Little Brother.
CLOSE ON PHILLIP; we. . .
DISSOLVE TO
INT. SERGEI’S OFFICE – DAY
Sergei is sipping his morning tea when there is a KNOCK on his door.
SERGEI
Enter.
Ivan enters the office and sits down in a chair opposite of Sergei.
SERGEI
Ah, Ivan. Anything to report?
Ivan shakes his head.
IVAN
No. It’s like Pavel has disappeared. Even the Russian embassy has no clue where the Americans are hiding him.
SERGEI
Damn! The showcase is tomorrow. We must act today. We will not fail.
IVAN
I am sorry I let you down, Brother.
The telephone RINGS. Sergei goes to answer it.
SERGEI
Maybe this is the lead we have been looking for and you, Brother, would have a second chance to prove yourself.
ON THE PHONE
SERGEI (continued)
Da.
(beat)
Otlichno. (Very good)
CLOSE UP ON SERGEI
He has a big smile on his face. He writes down something on a piece of paper and then hangs up the phone.
IVAN
Good news?
Sergei hands Ivan the piece of paper.
ON NOTE
4247 Maplewood Drive, Arlington.
BACK TO SCENE
SERGEI
Go now.
Ivan nods and then leaves.
CUT TO
EXT. SKATEBOARD PARK – DAY
Pavel is watching Jamie and Phillip practice a few tricks. Phillip is being more of a “hot dog” then Jamie, but all the boys appear to be having a good time. Phillip does a “manual.”
PAVEL
That’s really good, Phillip. Can you show me how to do that?
PHILLIP
It’s easy.
He explains the moves to Pavel.
PHILLIP (continued)
Place your back foot on the tail of the skateboard. Now lean your weight backwards until the front wheels come off the ground and try to hold that position while rolling. But don't lean too far back.
Pavel attempts this move but the skateboard shoots out from under him and he falls back.
PHILLIP
Not bad for your first time.
(beat)
All it takes is balance.
He demonstrates for Pavel again.
PHILLIP (continued)
Now you try.
PAVEL
Like this?
The boys continue to skateboard.
EXT. STREET – DAY
The Corvette drives down the streets of Arlington.
LEE (O.C.)
Just wait till I get my hands on them.
INT. CORVETTE – DAY
AMANDA
Sweetheart, I’m disappointed with them, too.
(beat)
They are both young and not thinking clearly.
LEE
Amanda, that is no excuse. They are sons of agents. They have to be ever vigilant or they are going to get someone hurt or worse get themselves killed.
AMANDA
Well, at least they left us a note.
LEE
Yes, but ditched the babysitters.
Lee pounds the steering wheel out of frustration.
AMANDA
Let's just find them. Then we'll kill them!
EXT. SKATEBOARD PARK
The boys begin to leave the skate park and head toward the parking lot.
JAMIE
You were really getting the hang of it back there.
PAVEL
Thanks to you two. Now I have some new skills to show off when I get back home.
(beat)
You know, for the ladies.
He winks and the boys laugh.
ANGLE TO INCLUDE THE ROAD
We see the Corvette pulling into the parking lot.
PHILLIP
We’re going to get it now. Here comes Mom and Lee and Lee does not look to happy.
PARKING LOT – DAY
The Corvette pulls into the park entrance. They see the boys and breathe a collective sigh of relief; however, it is short lived when they witness an oncoming, non-descript white cargo van swing past them quickly and pull in front of the boys.
INT. CORVETTE – THEIR POV
From the windshield of Pavel being grabbed.
A man dressed in a black hoodie, grabs Pavel and shoves him into the van.
BACK TO LEE AND AMANDA
AMANDA
Lee!
LEE
I see them.
ON LEE
Lee quickly hops out of the car, pulls out his gun, and makes a run toward them.
CORVETTE
Amanda slides into the driver’s seat, guns the engine, and pulls in front of the van.
ANGLE ON THE BOYS
As Jamie and Phillip try to stop the kidnapping.
ON LEE
Lee aims his gun, but does not have a clear shot.
The driver of the van fires off a couple shots at the Corvette; Amanda ducks. One of the bullets hits the rear tire on the car.
ON CORVETTE
Flat tire.
FULL SHOT
The van quickly backs up, almost running over Lee. He dives away while the van pulls away, burning rubber.
VAN SCREECHES OFF
The boys and Amanda run toward Lee and help him up, as they all helplessly stare in the direction the van took off.
HOLD ON THEM; and we. . .
END OF ACT THREE
ACT FOUR
EXT. SKATEBOARD PARK – PARKING LOT – DAY
LEATHERNECK is there with a flatbed tow truck, loading the Corvette onto the trailer.
Lee is shaking his head as he watches Leatherneck load his car. In the background, we see Amanda scolding the boys. The boys both have their heads down.
ON AMANDA
AMANDA
Do you have any idea how dangerous it was for you two to sneak out with Pavel?
PHILLIP/JAMIE
(in unison; mumbling)
Yes, Mom.
AMANDA
What on earth were you thinking? You could have been hurt or worse.
PHILLIP
We are sorry you are upset, Mom.
AMANDA
Upset?
(beat)
Yes, I’m upset. But I am more scared than upset. Those men could have kidnapped you too. This is not a game, Fellas. This is life and death. Now do you understand why I am upset?
PHILLIP/JAMIE
(in union; mumbling)
Yes, Mom.
JAMIE
We’ll pool our allowance and pay for Lee’s tire.
AMANDA
Don’t worry about that. The Agency will take care of Lee’s car. However, the two of you are grounded for the next two months. No skate park, no friends over, no going to the movies, nothing. Do I make myself clear?
PHILLIP/JAMIE
(in unison; very low)
Yes, Mom.
AMANDA
What?
PHILLIP AND JAMIE
(in unison; louder)
Yes, Mom.
ON WAGONEER
The Wagoneer pulls into the scene. Dotty climbs out of the Jeep and gasps when she sees Lee’s car.
DOTTY
Is everyone all right?
AMANDA
Yes, we are all fine.
(beat)
Mother, could you walk the boys home? Lee and I have to go to the office for a while. Since it appears they have so much time on their hands, they can clean up all the camping equipment in the garage.
Phillip starts to say something. Then reconsiders.
Dotty, Phillip, and Jamie exit.
Amanda walks over to Lee and puts a comforting arm around him.
LEE
Amanda, not since you were shot have I ever been more scared.
(beat)
They could have been killed or taken hostage themselves.
(another beat)
I couldn’t take a shot and risk a bullet ricocheting and hitting one of them.
AMANDA
I know, Lee.
Lee runs his hands through his hair.
LEE
I think they should both be grounded until they are twenty-one.
AMANDA
Sweetheart, I think that’s a bit tough; however, they are grounded for the next two months.
(beat)
And I think when we get home this evening we should lay down more specific ground rules and maybe it’s time they take the Agency training class offered to families of agents.
LEE
As usual, you are right. We really should have had those boys take the classes already.
AMANDA
You know what they say about hindsight being twenty-twenty.
CLOSE ON LEE
CUT TO
INT. KING-STETSON HOUSE – FRONT ENTRYWAY – DAY
The boys and Dotty file through the front door. The boys then head toward the stairs.
DOTTY
Boys, aren’t you forgetting something?
The boys stare at her for a moment.
DOTTY
(continued)
Put your skateboards and equipment away, then go upstairs and get some grubby clothes on.
JAMIE
Why?
DOTTY
(sarcasm)
Why?
(beat)
For cleaning the garage, that’s why?
PHILLIP
You remembered that?
DOTTY
Yes, Phillip. I’m not senile yet.
(beat)
Now move it.
The boys comply and exit.
INT. KITCHEN
Dotty enters the kitchen and crosses to the refrigerator. She opens the door. Then closes it.
DOTTY
(hollering up the stairs)
Boys! We are out of milk. I’m running to the grocery store. I should be back in ten minutes and you two better be cleaning the garage when I get back.
PHILLIP/JAMIE (O.C.)
(in unison)
Yes, Grandma.
Dotty grabs her purse from the counter; and we. . .
QUICK CUT
INT. GROCERY STORE
Konstantine hurries along canned goods aisle and stops. A few moments later, Ivan walks down the same aisle.
KONSTANTINE
What is it about Americans and their need for five different varieties of baked beans?
IVAN
(clenched teeth)
Quit the small talk.
(beat)
Why did you call for this meet?
KONSTANTINE
What have you done with Pavel?
IVAN
That is none of your business.
KONSTANTINE
Well, you made it my business. Part of our deal was if I told you where Pavel was being held, you promised not to hurt him.
IVAN
And we haven’t. . . yet.
(beat)
You were paid handsomely for your end of the bargain. Now don’t screw it up or we’ll have to hold off on the second half of your payment.
Ivan strides off. Konstantine turns and then collides with a shopping cart.
DOTTY
Excuse me.
Dotty reaches past Konstantine, selects a can of succotash, tosses it into her cart, watches the man hurriedly leave the store, and then heads toward the check-out lines.
EXT. GROCERY STORE – PAYPHONE - DAY
Dotty is in front of the store standing next to a payphone. She picks up the phone and, after placing a quarter in the coin slot, she dials the familiar number.
IFF OPERATOR (V.O.)
International Federal Film. How may I direct your call?
DOTTY
I need to speak with Mr. Melrose right away.
IFF OPERATOR (V.O)
Mr. Melrose is in a meeting and cannot be disturbed. Can one of our other producers help you?
Dotty glances around to see if anyone is listening.
DOTTY
(whispering)
I know IFF is just a front for the Agency.
IFF OPERATOR (V.O.)
Why, yes we do have a talent agency. Would you like to talk to them?
DOTTY
(louder)
Listen, my name is Dorothea West. My daughter and son-in-law work there. I’ve been there before, it’s a brick building in Georgetown.
(beat)
You probably want a code word. I don’t have one. You see, I’m at a payphone.
(beat)
It’s urgent I speak with Mr. Melrose, Lee Stetson, or Amanda King.
IFF OPERATOR (V.O.)
A-man. . . one moment, please.
INT. BILLY’S OFFICE – DAY
Billy is sitting at his desk. Lee and Amanda are sitting in chairs across from him.
BILLY
And the van?
AMANDA
Stolen from a construction site in the early morning hours.
LEE
Leatherneck has it now, but these people were pros. Everything has been wiped down.
BILLY
So we have nothing to go on.
The INTERCOM on his desk BEEPS.
Billy picks up the phone.
BILLY
(continues)
Yes, patch her through.
(beat; to Amanda)
It’s your mother.
(another beat)
Yes, Mrs. West, they are here with me. You are where?
(another beat)
And you heard what?
ON LEE AND AMANDA’S CONFUSED FACES
BILLY (V.O.)
(continued)
Very good, Mrs. West.
(beat)
Of course, I mean Dotty.
(another beat)
Yes, we can take it from here.
(another beat)
I will let them know.
(another beat)
Goodbye.
He hangs up the phone.
LEE
Well?
BILLY
Your mother said dinner would be ready by six.
(beat)
Oh, and we may have caught a lucky break on the case.
AMANDA
From my mother?
BILLY
It would appear you and your mother are very much alike and have the uncanny family ability of being at the right place, at the right time.
(beat)
She overheard Konstantine talking with another gentleman about taking a bribe.
AMANDA
(gasps)
Pavel’s coach?
BILLY
Go to the gym and bring him in for questioning.
Lee and Amanda both stand up and head out Billy’s door.
CUT TO
EXT. AGENCY – GEORGETOWN ENTRANCE – DAY
FULL SHOT of the building. The Wagoneer is parked out front on the street.
INT. OUTSIDE INTERROGATION ROOM – DAY
FROM AMANDA AND BILLY’S POV
Through the plexi-glass window that separates the two rooms. They are watching Lee question Konstantine. We hear Konstantine’s voice over the intercom.
KONSTANTINE (V. O.)
(filtered)
You’ve got to believe me, Mr. Stetson. I never met for any of this to happen?
LEE (V.O.)
Yeah? And why should I believe you?
INT. INTERROGATION ROOM
KONSTANTINE
Look, a few months ago, a man from the KGB came to visit me at my gym in Tula. He offered me a large sum of money if I promised to help make America look bad at the gymnastics showcase.
(beat)
I swear, I would have never agreed if I knew they were going to hurt Pavel. He’s my best student—a fast learner and willing to please, and a fantastic gymnast. He was a coach’s dream and I believed my one and only chance to take a Russian gymnast to the Olympic Games.
LEE
So then why did you try and get him killed?
KONSTANINE
Are you so sure they were aiming at Pavel, and not you, Mr. Stetson?
Lee picked up Konstanine by the lapels.
KONSTANINE
Please stop. I only did this to help my sister.
LEE
Your sister?
KONSTANINE
Yes, Alisa.
(beat)
She was recently diagnosed with blood cancer and needs a bone marrow transplant. The treatment is next to impossible in Russia, but here in the States, she’ll have a chance for living. I would do anything for my sister, but if I had known I would be trading a life for a life, I would have never agreed. You’ve got to believe me.
LEE
Okay. Let’s say I believe you. Who has him and what do they plan on doing with him?
Konstanine hangs his head.
KONSTANINE
I will only give you a name if you agree to let my sister continue treatments here in the States.
LEE
She’s here?
Konstanine nods his head.
KONSTANINE
She’s at Galilee General Hospital.
(beat)
I’ll go to prison. Anything. If you can promise me she will be looked after.
There is a RAP on the two-way mirror. Lee nods his head.
LEE
I’ll see what we can do. But I need a name now.
CLOSE ON KONSTANINE; we. . .
CUT TO
EXT. RESIDENTIAL STREET – DAY
A street lined with stately homes, many protected by iron gates.
WIDE SHOT ZOOMS ONTO
EXT. EVANOFF MANSION – DAY
A two-story mansion on a spacious lot surrounded by a wall, closed gate at the entrance driveway. The windows of the home are closed from view by blinds and drapes. A limo is parked in a front circular drive.
EXT. EVANOFF MANSION – CIRCULAR DRIVEWAY – DAY
Agency vehicles pour up the drive to the mansion, with the Wagoneer in the lead.
ON LEE
He jumps from the Jeep as it SKIDS to a halt. The other agents fan out over the property. Lee runs up the entry steps as Amanda moves to meet him.
ON WINDOW
The window drapes part slightly as Sergei peers out, and then closes them again.
Sergei faces Ivan. He is furious.
INT. GREAT ROOM – DAY
Large formal room dominated by a large staircase that climbs to a second story. Agents run up with a battering rod and busts open the door. Lee is the first one inside, his gun drawn.
LEE
Freeze, Federal Agents.
Sergei complies, but Ivan sprints up the flight of stairs. Lee is right behind him. Ivan manages to FIRE a couple shots.
Lee ducks.
INT. HALLWAY
Ivan takes off down the hallway, just after Lee reaches the landing.
There is a long Persian rug running the length of the hallway. Pulling an Amanda-like move, Lee forcefully tugs on the end of the carpet, tripping Ivan in the process.
Before Ivan has a chance to get up, Lee grabs him and draws Ivan to his feet.
ON LEE
LEE
I guess you could say, I pulled the rug right out from under you.
Smiling at his own joke.
QUICK CUT
INT. GREAT ROOM
A handcuffed Ivan is being escorted down the stairs by Lee.
SERGEI
(who is handcuffed)
You have no right to barge into my home. I have diplomatic privileges. I’ll be filing a protest.
BILLY
All that’s going to get you is a one-way ticket home.
In the background, we see Amanda coming from another room with Pavel. She walks over to where Lee has just finished shoving Ivan toward another agent. Agents exit with Ivan and Sergei.
PAVEL
(to Lee and Amanda)
How can I ever thank you?
AMANDA
Just knock them dead at the gymnastics showcase.
PAVEL
I think I can do that.
He shakes both their hands. All smiles.
HOLD ON THEM. FREEZE FRAME and we. . .

EXT. SOVIET EMBASSY – NIGHT
ESTABLISH embassy row. Mansion is ablaze with lights, limousines crowd the entrance. From within comes the sound of an ORCHESTRA playing music.
EXT. SOVIET EMBASSY – BALLROOM – NIGHT
AMANDA (V.O.)
It sure was nice of the Russians to invite us to the After Party.
CAMERA REVEAL
Everyone is dressed elegantly, black ties and formal gowns. There is a party in progress.
LEE
I think this is their way to reach across the aisle. A good-will gesture for a job well done.
AMANDA
Do you think our two countries will ever be allies?
Lee shrugs.
LEE
Maybe, but not likely in our lifetime.
Lee gestures toward the dance floor.
LEE (continued)
Shall we?
Amanda nods, and they find their spot among other dancers. A slow ballad is playing. Looking over her left shoulder she sees her mother dancing with a very distinguished looking gentleman.
AMANDA
And it was nice of the Russian consulate to invite Mother, too. Appears she’s having the time of her life.
LEE
Well, why not? After all, it was Dotty who solved the case.
AMANDA
I was glad to see Pavel do so well in the gymnastics showcase, even after all that he’s been through.
(beat)
What happens to Konstanine now?
LEE
Well, I am happy to report, he gets to stay in the States for a little bit longer, well, at least until his sister’s treatment is complete.
(beat)
After that, he’ll most likely be sent back to Russia.
AMANDA
Poor Konstantine. He only wanted to help his sister. Maybe we could talk to the State Department about letting him stay here.
Lee shakes his head in amazement.
LEE
Amanda, you really do have a heart of gold.
He pulls her closer. CLOSE ON THEM. . . FREEZE FRAME

ACT ONE
FREEZE FRAME and we. . .
END OF ACT FOUR

FADE IN
