A recap of The Choices We Made – Part One
Super: Last Week.
As the Agency deals with pre-election year housekeeping duties, Lee and Amanda are sent to investigate a case of vaccination tampering. Meanwhile, Billy is seriously injured in a traffic accident and Lee steps in as temporary Section Chief. When his decision leads to the death of a fellow agent, Lee must deal with the ramifications. Conversely, juggling Agency duties, finding time together, an inquisitive Dotty, and Lee’s recurring nightmares, have Lee and Amanda rethinking their relationship and their secret.
And now, the exciting conclusion of Scarecrow and Mrs. King. . .
ACT ONE
EXT. THE NESHEIM RESIDENCE – ESTABLISHING – DAY
LEE and AMANDA stand at the front door of the Nesheim’s house. Lee hesitates for a second and Amanda takes his hand and gently squeezes it offering him comfort. He then KNOCKS. A pregnant JANET NESHEIM opens the door a few moments later.
JANET
(surprised)
Lee.
She then glances at Amanda.
JANET (continued)
Amanda.
(beat)
What’s going on?
LEE
Hello, Janet. May we come in?
Janet opens the door for them. Lee and Amanda enter the house.
JANET
Sure, come on in. I just made some chocolate chip cookies. They are warm and gooey just the way Tony likes them.
INT. LIVING ROOM
Janet busies herself, but it is almost as if she knows what is coming. She then walks over to the fireplace mantel and picks up a family photo.
JANET
This was taken last year on our cruise to Alaska. Tony especially loved going sport fishing. He was in seventh heaven.
LEE
(whisper)
Janet, we have some news.
JANET
Please, don’t.
She does not turn around to face them, but puts the picture back on the mantle.
JANET (continued)
Tony. . .
(tears come readily)
Is he. . .
Lee walks up behind her and places his hand on her shoulder.
LEE
Tony was involved in an Agency bust this afternoon. Gunfire was exchanged and Tony was hit. He was rushed to the hospital. The paramedics did everything they could. . .
(Lee’s voice cracks)
I’m sorry.
JANET
No.
She shakes her head.
JANET (continued)
NO!
Lee reaches out to her and pulls her close to him. She breaks down and sobs against his shoulder.
JANET
How did it happen? Who did this to him?
LEE
You know I can’t answer that.
MASON (O.C.)
(A small voice)
Mom?
MASON, Janet and Tony’s 6-year-old son, enters the living room. Janet looks over at him.
JANET
Hey, Pumpkin.
(beat)
I have something I need to tell you. . . Your dad. . .
She chokes back tears and then whimpers.
JANET
I can’t. . .
She breaks down again in uncontrollable sobs. Lee leads her over to the sofa and sits down with her. He looks over to Amanda who takes the hint.
Amanda walks over to the little boy and bends down to talk to him.
AMANDA
What’s your name?
MASON
Mason.
AMANDA
Hello, Mason. My name is Amanda. My friend Lee is talking with your mother, so why don’t we go into the kitchen for now and check on those cookies.
MASON
'Kay.
Amanda takes Mason’s hand and he leads her to the kitchen.
INT. KITCHEN
The two of them walk over to the oven and Amanda opens the oven door and then looks at the timer.
AMANDA
Okay, that batch only needs two more minutes.
She looks around the room.
AMANDA (continued)
Mason, do you know where your mother hides the hot pads?
Mason opens a door and pulls two hot pads out for her, then sits down at the kitchen table and begins to draw.
AMANDA
Could I get you a couple cookies and a glass of milk?
MASON
(not even looking up)
Uh-huh.
Amanda opens a couple cupboards until she finds the plates and puts three cookies on the plate. She then finds a glass, grabs a gallon of milk from the refrigerator, pours him a glass and takes him his treats. She sits down next to him.
AMANDA
How old are you, Mason?
MASON
I’m six.
AMANDA
I bet you are in the first grade.
MASON
How did you know that? You’re smart.
AMANDA
Well, I’m a mother, and I have two boys.
MASON
What are their names?
AMANDA
Phillip and Jamie.
MASON
My mom’s gonna to have a baby. He’s gonna to be a brother.
AMANDA
Are you looking forward to being a big brother?
MASON
Yeah.
The BUZZER rings and Amanda stands up and walks over to the stove taking out the cookies, places them on a cooling rack, and then sits back down next to Mason.
AMANDA
What are you drawing?
MASON
My Winnie the Pooh coloring book.
AMANDA
Who’s your favorite? I always had a soft spot for Eeyore.
He thinks about it for a moment.
MASON
I like Pooh Bear the mostest.
AMANDA
Can I help?
He hands her a box of crayons. Amanda takes out a crayon and begins to draw on the opposite page Mason is working on.
MASON
What’s wrong with Mommy? Why is she upset?
AMANDA
Do you know what it means when someone dies?
MASON
It means someone has gone to heaven. My Grandpa is in heaven.
(beat)
When’s Daddy coming home? Mommy is sad. Daddy knows how to make Mommy smile.
AMANDA
Mason, I want you to look at me.
Mason stops his drawing and looks at Amanda.
AMANDA (continued)
You’re daddy isn’t coming home. He died.
Mason blinks several times.
AMANDA (continued)
Do you understand what I said?
MASON
(crying)
What’s going to happen to me?
Amanda hugs him. Lee enters the kitchen.
INTERCUT:
INT. KITCHEN (LEE’S FLASHBACK) – DAY
Scenes flash through Lee’s mind and then stops at a particular memory.
YOUNG LEE’S POV
Seven-year-old Lee is hiding under a dining room table. On the table are several casserole dishes and desserts. ROBERT CLAYTON enters the room and looks for his nephew. He spots a pair of shoes under the table.
ROBERT
Get out of there, Son.
YOUNG LEE
No! I’m not your son. I want Mummy. I want Daddy. I want Grandma.
ROBERT
Knock it off, Lee. You’re not five years old. Now, be a good little soldier and come out from under there.
YOUNG LEE
No!
ROBERT
Lee!
REVEREND REINHART enters the room and puts a hand on Robert’s shoulder.
REVEREND REINHART
Please, Robert, let me.
ROBERT
Be my guest, Reverend.
Reverend Reinhart gets down on all fours and crawls under the table with Lee.
REVEREND REINHART
Hello, Lee.
YOUNG LEE
(small voice)
Hello.
REVEREND REINHART
It’s been a while since I have been under a table.
(beat)
See this scar here?
He points to a faded scar above his right eyebrow.
REVEREND REINHART (continued)
I got this when I was about four years old. I bumped my forehead on the corner of a table coming out from under it. Hope I don’t do it again.
Young Lee is silent.
REVEREND REINHART
(clears his throat)
I ended up needing four stitches and was told I would have a scar. I thought the doctor said ‘star,’ so naturally I thought I was pretty special because I had a star on my forehead.
Young Lee smiles.
REVEREND REINHART (continued)
Would you like to talk? I’ve been told I am a good listener.
Young Lee shakes his head, and the Reverend pats his knee.
REVEREND REINHART (continued)
Its okay, Lee, nothing wrong with being silent.
The Reverend starts to crawl out.
YOUNG LEE
Why does everyone I love leave me? First my parents, and now my grandma. Have I been a bad boy?
REVEREND REINHART
Of course not, Son.
The Reverend pauses for a moment.
REVEREND REINHART
(under his breath, in silent prayer)
Lord, help me with the right words of council for this boy.
YOUNG LEE
Why does it hurt so much?
REVEREND REINHART
It’s called grieving, and we grieve because we miss them. We grieve because they are gone from our lives and cannot return. Believe me when I say this, though, they are here-
He points to Lee’s chest.
REVEREND REINHART (continued)
. . . they will remain in our hearts; when it is our time, we are reunited with them once more. So grieve, Lee, because grieving is the first step to healing.
YOUNG LEE
What going to happen to me?
REVEREND REINHART
Although it might be hard to comprehend right now, life will go on. You may never fully heal, and that is okay, because it makes us who we are, it shows that we can love. It shows how wonderful love can be.
AMANDA (O.C.)
Lee? Lee, answer me.
ON LEE AND AMANDA (PRESENT DAY)
Lee focuses on Amanda who has been calling his name. He shakes his head out of the distant memory.
AMANDA
(concerned)
Are you okay?
Lee nods his head.
LEE
Amanda, I think it is time for us to go.
AMANDA
Would Janet like us to contact anyone?
Lee shakes his head.
LEE
She said she would contact her family after we have left.
Amanda nods her head.
AMANDA
Okay. Let me say goodbye to Mason.
(to Mason)
It was nice spending some time with you. Be a good boy for your mom.
Mason nods his head. Janet comes into the room and hugs him tightly, while Lee and Amanda grab hands and walk out together. Lee gives one more glance over his shoulder, observing this scene and we. . .
QUICK CUT
EXT. LEE’S APARTMENT – NIGHT
Lee’s Corvette and Amanda’s Wagoneer are parked on the street in front of Lee’s apartment.
INT. LEE’S APARTMENT – NIGHT
Lee and Amanda are sitting on the sofa in the living room. Amanda is resting her head on his chest, and has her feet tucked under her. Lee is lost in thought.
LEE (V.O.)
"That could be you one day talking to strangers about your dead husband. Trying to unravel the truth about his death, knowing you’ll never find it. Not your typical two career family. One of us might not come home for dinner. . . ever."
AMANDA
Sweetheart, I’m a pretty good listener, but a lousy mind reader.
LEE
Hmm?
AMANDA
Are you okay?
Lee does not look at her for a beat.
LEE
I’m fine.
AMANDA
Really?
LEE
I keep remembering the look on Janet’s face when I told her Tony had been killed in the line of duty, and then the guilt I felt knowing I could never tell her the truth about what went down. Telling her sorry seemed so. . . inadequate. Did you know Harry V. Thornton recruited Tony the same year he recruited me?
AMANDA
Lee, don’t do this to yourself. It wasn’t your fault.
LEE
It isn’t? This was my operation, Amanda, from start to finish, and I had sent a fellow agent and a friend to die needlessly. Mason will grow up without a dad and the new baby will never know his or her father.
AMANDA
(small voice)
His.
Lee looks at her surprised.
AMANDA (continued)
Mason told me.
(beat)
We’re agents. We know the risks.
Lee turns to her and takes her hands.
LEE
Yes, risks. There are risks in everyday living, too. Look Billy was hit by a car and it had nothing to do with the Agency.
(beat)
I’m tired, Amanda. I’m tired of this marriage.
(another beat)
No, that came out wrong.
(another beat)
I’m tired of stolen moments with you. I should have hocked everything I had and bought our family that house in Rockville last year. I should have never suggested a mystery marriage.
(long pause)
Life is too short, and I want to spend the weekends with our boys playing softball in the backyard and barbecuing. I want to wake up with my wife beside me every morning. Isn’t that what you want?
AMANDA
Of course, but I thought we had agreed it would be safer for everyone if we kept our marriage a secret.
LEE
None of us are completely safe in this job, you know that. Face it, all the bad guys know I work for the Agency, and you yourself over the years have taken down a bad guy or two. In addition, anyone with half a brain knows we’re involved. Billy doesn’t even bother to call my apartment anymore, because he knows I'm at your house. Besides, don't you think we would be safer if I was in the house all the time, instead of fifteen minutes away if there was trouble?
AMANDA
Okay, you win.
LEE
This isn’t a contest. It’s about protecting our family.
AMANDA
The choices we made, made our life harder, not easier. . . we made those choices out of fear and failure. We’ve hurt a lot of people, Lee. People who are going to have a hard time forgiving us.
LEE
I know. Nevertheless, we can do this together, and if the Agency has a problem with us being married and partners, then hang the Agency.
(beat)
Please, Amanda.
Lee gives her a pleading look.
AMANDA
Okay. I agree, I think it's time to take the 'mystery' out of our marriage.
He smiles at her and then leans in to kiss. They both pull back and have big grins on their faces; we. . .
END OF ACT ONE
ACT TWO
EXT. CEMETERY – DAY
The sun is shining and a large group of people, including Lee and Amanda, are gathered around a flag-draped coffin. Lee has a pained expression on his face. Janet is sitting on a folded chair near the front, silently crying. An older couple sits next to her, the woman holds her hand and the gentleman holds Mason on his lap. A MILITARY CHAPLAIN gives a final eulogy.
MILITARY CHAPLAIN
I'm sure we all have similar memories of Anthony Nesheim. He was a wonderful father and husband, a great friend, and a selfless hero, who no one will ever forget.
A Marine HONOR GUARD OFFICER clad in a Marine uniform calls out to the rifle party.
OFFICER IN CHARGE
Present arms!
The HONOR GUARD then performs a three-volley salute.
OFFICER IN CHARGE
Fire.
(beat; the guns cock)
Fire.
(another beat; the guns cock again)
Fire.
Then six Honor Guards begin the ceremonial folding of the flag, their hands crossing this way and that.
OFFICER IN CHARGE
The first fold of the flag represents life on earth. The second fold, a symbol of eternal life. The third fold made in honor of the veteran who gave a portion of his life for the defense of the United States. The fourth fold represents humanity's weaker nature, and America’s reliance on God during times of peace, as well as in times of war. The fifth fold, a tribute to our country. The sixth fold for where hearts lie. The seventh fold, a tribute to the United States Armed Forces. Forces that protect country and flag against all enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of the Republic. The eighth Fold, a tribute to the one who has entered in to the valley of the shadow of death, that humanity might see the light of day. The ninth fold, a tribute to motherhood. The tenth fold is a tribute to fatherhood. The eleventh fold, in the eyes of a Jewish citizen, represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon, and glorifies, in their eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The twelfth fold, in the eyes of the Christian citizen, represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in their eyes, God the Father, the Son, and Holy Ghost.
Lee steps forward, takes the folded flag, the stars pointed upwards, from the Honor Guardsman, and then hands it to Janet Nesheim.
LEE
This flag is presented on behalf of a grateful nation and the United States Army as a token of appreciation for your loved one's honorable and faithful service.
Janet takes the flag and holds it against her chest, openly weeping.
Lee steps back.
Then a lone BUGLER plays Taps. After he is done playing, people begin to get up and leave. Lee spots HARRY V. THORNTON in the crowd and walks over to him.
LEE
Harry.
Harry shakes Lee’s hand.
HARRY
How are you holding out, Son?
LEE
To be quite honest, not so well. Would it be okay if I stopped by your townhouse later today?
HARRY
Sure. I’ll have tea ready. Say 2:00 p.m.?
Lee nods briefly, then walks toward Amanda and takes her hand again, leading her toward the parking lot.
QUICK CUT
EXT. THORNTON’S GEORGETOWN TOWNHOUSE – LATER THAT DAY
Amanda’s Wagoneer is parked in front of Harry’s building. Lee and Amanda stand outside the entrance door. They are holding hands and looking nervous. Lee pushes the intercom button.
HARRY (O.C.)
Lee, my boy, right on time. Come on up.
He buzzes them through.
BUZZER AND CLICKING SOUND
Lee opens the door and allows Amanda to enter through the threshold first.
INT. HARRY THORNTON’S DOOR – DAY
Lee and Amanda are standing outside the door. Lee lightly taps on the door and the door swings open.
HARRY (O.C.)
The tea is almost ready.
The door opens fully and Harry notices Amanda.
HARRY (continued)
Oh, I see you brought company.
LEE
Harry, I would like to introduce you to my wife, Amanda.
Harry looks stunned. He looks over at Amanda and then Lee and staggers back.
LEE
Harry?
AMANDA
(worried)
Oh, my gosh. We didn't mean to startle you.
They both enter through the doorway. Lee comes up behind Harry.
LEE
Here, sit down.
INT. THORNTON’S LIVING ROOM
Amanda pulls out a chair for him, and Harry sits down and blinks a couple of times.
LEE
Are you okay?
AMANDA
Do you need a drink of water?
Amanda starts to head toward the kitchen. Harry comes out from the shock of what Lee and Amanda have told him. Then laughs and slaps his hands to his knees.
HARRY
Married?
Both Lee and Amanda wear sheepish grins.
LEE AND AMANDA
(in unison)
Yes.
HARRY
Sit down you two. We do have a lot to talk about.
He stands up and then steers them toward the dining room.
INT. DINING ROOM
HARRY (continued)
Tea should be ready. I’ll be right back.
AMANDA
Let me help you, Sir.
HARRY
Nonsense, Amanda, make yourself at home.
He pulls out a chair for Amanda and she sits down. He then motions to Lee to take a seat, and Lee sits down next to Amanda.
HARRY
I’ll be right back with tea and scones.
Harry exits to the kitchen.
ON LEE AND AMANDA
Both are fidgeting at the table.
AMANDA
(hollers)
Are you sure I can’t help you?
HARRY (O.C,)
You are my guest. Relax.
ON HARRY as he comes around the corner. He sees them, but they do not see him. He is holding a tray with a teakettle and plate of scones. He sees Lee take Amanda’s hand and whispers ‘love you.’ She blushes. Harry sighs then enters the room fully and places the tray on the table. The table is already set with teacups and saucers and spreads for the scones. Harry brought an extra cup for Amanda.
He places the cup and saucer down in front of Amanda, pours hot water into the cups, and then sits down opposite them.
There is an awkward silence for a few moments while they drink their tea. Harry shakes his head and then breaks the silence.
HARRY
How long?
LEE
February 13th.
HARRY
(nods his head)
Ah, the McMasters case, of course.
AMANDA
You know about the McMaster’s case and Nick Grant?
HARRY
Not much I don’t know, Amanda. Although retired, I do like to keep eyes and ears open, and I’m still on the Board of Directors.
(beat)
I heard rumors about you two, but never expected this.
(another beat)
I assume that is why you are here today. To talk to me about what the Agency is going to do with you and how they are going to react to you as a married couple.
Both Lee and Amanda nod their heads. Lee reaches over, takes Amanda’s hand, and squeezes it.
AMANDA
We know there are rules. . .
HARRY
Rules against fraternization among coworkers. Yes, I wrote those rules. Although, I knew it would not totally stop office affairs, flirtation, or the occasional backgammon games.
He looks at Lee when he delivers his last comment. Both Lee and Amanda are surprised by his statement.
AMANDA
It’s not fair. Sleeping around without the benefits of marriage outside the office is allowed, but--
LEE
(surprised)
A-man-da.
HARRY
Now Amanda, don’t be putting words in my mouth. Rules are important. Yes. However, I understand that sometimes rules can be bent from time to time.
He looks at Lee.
HARRY (continued)
You always were a rule breaker, weren’t you?
(beat)
Although unprecedented, I approve of your relationship. I think you are good for each other both personally and professionally. And I will do everything in my power to keep you partners, both on the field and at home.
(another beat)
Congratulations, you two.
He shakes both their hands and Lee and Amanda grin at each other and we. . .
QUICK CUT
EXT. AGENCY – GEORGETOWN ENTRANCE – NEXT DAY
The CAMERA tracks Lee’s Corvette pulling into the underground parking garage entrance.
INT. BILLY’S OFFICE – DAY
Lee is sitting at Billy’s desk going through a stack of files. Amanda is sitting across from him taking notes when there is a knock on the door.
LEE
Come in.
FRANCINE enters.
FRANCINE
Not interrupting anything, am I?
She winks at them.
AMANDA
Sorry to disappoint, but you’re not interrupting anything.
LEE
Do you have a status report on Fall Harvest?
Francine sits in the chair next to Amanda and Lee stands up and perches himself on the edge of the desk.
Francine opens a file and begins to read.
FRANCINE
We have twelve protest rallies, eleven money scammers, ten Elvis sightings--
LEE
Really?
FRANCINE
I’m not done, yet. Nine underground nuclear tests, eight military coups, seven scientists defecting, six embassy parties, five drug rings.
Amanda and Francine look at each other and smile.
AMANDA/FRANCINE
(in unison; singing)
Four Colly Birds.
LEE
Huh?
AMANDA AND FRANCINE
(in unison; singing)
Three French Hens, Two Turtle Doves, and a Partridge in a Pear Tree.
LEE
What in a pear tree?
AMANDA
Sorry, couldn’t resist—the status report almost sounded like the Twelve Days of Christmas.
Lee looks at both of them confused.
AMANDA
The Twelve Days of Christmas—it’s a Christmas folk song. Surely, you’ve heard it.
Lee shrugs.
FRANCINE
Come on, Lee, how uncultured can you be?
LEE
(almost insulted)
I’m cultured.
FRANCINE
Maybe now that you are married, Amanda can help you become more normal. How do you expect to fit into Suburbia if you don't know Christmas carols?
Lee rolls his eyes.
LEE
If you are done insulting me, are there any other status updates? What do we know about Jensen-Clark’s CEO? Is he still on the run?
FRANCINE
We’ve checked all airports, train stations and bus depots within a hundred miles. Joseph Kelsey hasn’t checked in for any flights, national or international. His passport is flagged in the system. We have nets out for him. He’s not going to get far.
LEE
He better not.
(beat)
I want this guy.
(another beat)
And what about the tampered vials?
FRANCINE
All have been accounted for and destroyed. The CDC is mopping up that mess.
LEE
Good.
FRANCINE
How’s Agent Bachman this morning?
AMANDA
He’s been upgraded from critical to serious but stable condition. He’s not out of the woods yet, and has a long road of recovery before him.
FRANCINE
Good news. And how are you two holding up?
Lee and Amanda look at each other, having a silent conversation and then Lee shrugs.
LEE
We have some news we’d like to share with you.
FRANCINE
(looks at Amanda)
You’re pregnant?
AMANDA
Oh, my gosh, no.
ON LEE stunned.
LEE
(finding his voice)
No. We have decided to come clean about our marriage.
FRANCINE
It’s about time.
(beat)
What made you decide to come clean?
AMANDA
Several reasons, but mostly we’re tired of living apart.
Francine nods her head.
FRANCINE
What’s your plan of attack?
AMANDA
Please, Francine, this isn’t an Agency operation.
LEE
However, we did tell Harry Thornton last night. He’s on our side.
FRANCINE
Harry’s a good mentor and friend.
(beat)
Have you told your family, yet?
AMANDA
No, that was what we were discussing right before you came in. We’re taking an early lunch and going to tell Mother.
FRANCINE
Are you going to tell her all your secrets?
Amanda and Lee both nod their heads.
FRANCINE
You both are going to need to do some serious mending of fences when this is all over.
AMANDA
We know.
FRANCINE
And what about the boys?
AMANDA
That is where we are having a bit of a disagreement.
FRANCINE
They are not little boys anymore, Amanda.
LEE
That is what I told her.
AMANDA
They’re only 12 and 14.
LEE
They’re old enough to understand the terms ‘need to know’ and ‘national security.’
FRANCINE
I have to agree with Lee on this one, Amanda.
Amanda gives her a sour look.
FRANCINE (continued)
But who am I to butt in?
Looking at Francine and then Lee, Amanda reluctantly nods her head.
FRANCINE
I don’t envy being in either one of your shoes.
LEE
Me either.
FRANCINE
You know there is one other person you need to tell, before everyone else.
CLOSE UP ON LEE
Lee nods his head in understanding; we. . .
END OF ACT TWO
ACT THREE
EXT. AMANDA’S HOUSE - DAY
ZOOM IN on 4247 sign
INT. AMANDA’S HOUSE – DAY
Lee and Amanda enter through the front door of the house and they both observe DOTTY coming around the corner holding a dust can and cloth.
INT. FOYER
DOTTY
Hello, Darlings. You’re home early. Have you been called on location and you’re just here to pack?
AMANDA
No, Mother.
Lee and Amanda exchange glances. It is oblivious they are nervous and Dotty catches on.
DOTTY
What’s wrong?
LEE
Nothing.
AMANDA
Lee is right. Nothing is wrong; however, we have something to tell you.
DOTTY
Oh. My. Gosh.
(beat)
Lee, that is so sweet of you to ask permission first, even though a bit old fashioned. Of course, you have my blessing.
Lee and Amanda exchange glances again.
DOTTY (continued)
That is why you are here? To tell me you two are getting married, right?
AMANDA
Not exactly.
Lee smiles at her.
The DOORBELL rings.
They hear the doorbell and Lee steps back to open the door and BILLY, standing on crutches, steps through the threshold and down the stairs into the foyer, with Lee helping him. Dotty does not see this.
INT. DINING ROOM
AMANDA
Why don’t we all sit down in the dining room and Lee and I will explain everything.
DOTTY
Young lady, what do you mean by ‘not exactly?’
AMANDA
Here, Mother. Sit down.
Amanda pulls out a chair for her and Dotty sits down. Lee then enters through the dining room archway with Billy behind.
DOTTY
You!
(beat)
What’s HE doing here?
AMANDA
We asked him to be here.
DOTTY
You two aren't in trouble again?
(beat)
You aren’t going to be on the run again?
Amanda sits down next to Dotty, takes her hand and gently squeezes it. Billy leans his crutches against the table and then sits down, and then Lee sits down next to Billy.
AMANDA
No.
Dotty glances around the table at Amanda, Lee, and then Billy.
DOTTY
I am not in some sort of trouble, am I?
BILLY
(laughs)
I can assure you – you are not in trouble and neither is Lee nor Amanda. However, I believe you need to hear them out.
DOTTY
Go ahead. I’m listening.
AMANDA
It all started when I took Dean to the train station. . . .
FADE TO BLACK
BACK TO SCENE
BILLY
Mrs. West, I know this is a lot to absorb. Do you have any questions?
Dotty has been rendered speechless. She looks around the room again.
DOTTY
Spies. . . I mean intelligence operatives.
(glances at Lee and then Amanda; angrily)
How many other lies have you been telling me?
AMANDA
Mother, it isn’t like that.
LEE
Don’t be mad at Amanda. If anything, you should be mad at me.
(beat)
In the beginning, I told her for her and her family’s safety she couldn’t tell anyone.
BILLY
Actually, that was my fault.
AMANDA
No, Sir, it’s not your fault or Lee’s. Mother, you see the further I became involved in the Agency, the more difficult it was to tell the truth.
DOTTY
So, why tell me now?
Amanda bites her lip and looks over toward Lee. He nods his head, stands up, walks around the table, and then places a hand on Dotty’s shoulder.
LEE
Dotty, as I am sure you are aware, I am in love with your daughter.
She turns slightly to look at him and pats his hand.
DOTTY
Of course.
LEE
Well, yes.
(beat)
You see. Um. . . because of the secrecy of our jobs and we weren’t sure how work would respond to us being partners and then some other
things. . .
(another beat)
Amanda and I. . . well, you see. . .
AMANDA
We eloped.
DOTTY
You what?
(beat)
You two got married?!!
(another beat)
You aren’t telling me this because you have to?
Lee and Amanda look at each other and then realization dawns on both their features.
AMANDA
Mother! No!
DOTTY
When did you two find time to elope?
AMANDA
(mumbles)
February 13th.
DOTTY
(gasps)
Your trip to California. . .
(beat)
When you were shot! Was that because of your. . . job?
AMANDA
No, really, Mother. I was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Dotty looks over at Lee and Billy.
DOTTY
Really?
BILLY
I assure you, Mrs. West. It was not Agency related.
DOTTY
(to Billy, angrily)
And how long have you known about their relationship?
BILLY
I suspected something for a while; however, I only just found out about their marriage about an hour ago, before they asked me to come over here and talk with you.
Dotty nods her head. There is silence in the room for several moments. Dotty then stands up.
DOTTY
I am still angry with you, Mr. Stetson. . . but welcome to the family.
She reaches out and gives him a hug, which he returns.
BILLY
Well, if you have no more questions for me, I better be getting back home.
He stands up and grabs his crutches.
BILLY (continued)
Lee, Amanda. I’ll see you two later.
(to Dotty)
Mrs. West, always a pleasure.
DOTTY
Here let me help you to the door.
INT. FOYER
They both stand by the front door. Billy takes out a business card and hands it to Dotty.
BILLY
Here is my card with my direct line, so you no longer are directed through the switchboard. Call me, anytime.
DOTTY
I still can’t believe my baby is a spy and she is married to a spy. It all feels so surreal.
(beat)
Are they that good?
BILLY
The best team I have.
DOTTY
Is their partnership going to be dissolved?
BILLY
Not if I have anything to say about it.
DOTTY
Can’t spies marry?
BILLY
Yes, of course, but generally not to each other, and not partners.
DOTTY
Aren’t you their boss, don’t you have a say in the matter?
BILLY
I am their supervisor. I’m usually in charge of field section, but Lee has been in charge while I have been laid up.
DOTTY
What happened to you? Never mind, I shouldn’t have asked--
(she glances around the room; stage whisper)
. . . it’s probably spy related.
BILLY
(laughs)
No, nothing like that, I was hit by a car while crossing the street.
DOTTY
You poor man.
BILLY
Listen, Mrs. West, go easy on those two. At the time, they really thought they were doing what was best for the family.
DOTTY
Is the family in danger?
BILLY
Be assured the Agency takes care of its own.
DOTTY
It’s obvious you care about both of them.
Billy nods his head.
BILLY
Very much. I think of Lee as a son. Just a few years ago, I was worried about him.
DOTTY
Why?
BILLY
He was on the fast track of some destructive behavior; taking risks, taking the most dangerous jobs.
DOTTY
What changed?
Billy smiles.
BILLY
Amanda.
(beat)
She brings out the best in him.
DOTTY
Aren’t you mad at them?
BILLY
Mad, no. Disappointed, yes. I can’t believe they kept something of this magnitude a secret from me.
Dotty nods her head and Billy puts his hat on.
DOTTY
Do you have any children?
BILLY
Yes, two daughters.
DOTTY
Any mystery marriages?
BILLY
(chuckles)
No, no mystery marriages.
(beat)
Listen, Mrs. West. . .
DOTTY
Dotty, please. I feel you are part family now.
BILLY
Thank you, Dotty. Please call me Billy.
(beat)
I am sorry if we started on the wrong foot.
DOTTY
I am sure you were just doing your job.
(beat)
By the way, what did happen?
BILLY
I can’t say, since most of it is classified. However, at the time we had reason to believe Lee had sold out to the Russians.
DOTTY
Goodness.
(beat)
The boys. What are they going to tell Phillip and Jamie?
BILLY
They have permission to tell the boys everything.
Billy opens the door.
BILLY
Call me if you need anything or leave a message with my assistant, Francine.
DOTTY
Francine? I think I met her a couple years ago.
(beat)
Yes, the woman with the chimpanzee.
Billy gives a hearty laugh.
BILLY
Chimpanzee? This story I just have to hear.
DOTTY
It was back when Amanda had her pet sitting business.
(beat)
There never was any dog walking or plant watering business, was there? Or club? No film company? No documentaries on tractors or earthworms?
BILLY
Actually, there is.
(beat)
IFF really makes documentaries. It helps maintain our cover.
(another beat)
Dotty, you seem to be an intelligent woman, surely you didn’t believe all the stories Amanda told you.
Dotty shakes her head.
DOTTY
No, for a while I thought maybe she was involved in something illegal, but dismissed that notion quickly. Then I thought maybe she was having an affair with someone from work.
(beat; she shrugs)
Nevertheless, I knew Amanda was an adult and when she was ready to tell me what she was up to, she would tell me.
BILLY
You are a remarkable woman.
(beat)
Well, I better get home and rest this leg. Jeanie will be worried about me – if I don’t get home soon.
Billy shakes hands with Dotty.
DOTTY
Thanks for coming. It’s been most informative.
Billy exits.
She places her hand on the door and takes a deep breath.
DOTTY
Okay, Super Spies, I believe you owe me lunch.
QUICK CUT
EXT. AGENCY GEORGETOWN ENTRANCE – LATER THAT AFTERNOON
ZOOM IN on the IFF sign.
INT. AGENCY CORRIDOR HALLWAY – DAY
Lee and Amanda come out of the elevator and head down the corridor toward the bullpen.
INT. BULLPEN
They turn the corner and several AGENTS yell, ‘Surprise.’ There is a large banner across the room reading, ‘Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Stetson.’ There is also a three-tiered wedding cake on a table in the center of the room. On top of the cake is a bride and groom topper.
AMANDA
Oh, my gosh!
Lee and Amanda see Francine approach them.
LEE
Did you tell?
FRANCINE
I swear it was not me.
AMANDA
Who told?
Francine shrugs, then leads them toward the cake, and hands them a knife.
FRANCINE
I believe this is tradition.
Amanda takes the knife and Lee helps her slice into the cake. The crowd claps. Amanda places the piece of cake on a plate and then proceeds to feed Lee. He takes a bite and then with a wicked grin, smiles at Amanda.
AMANDA
You wouldn’t dare?
LEE
(smug)
Hmm? I vaguely remember someone smashing a sample wedding cake in my face several months ago.
AMANDA
Who, me?
LEE
Yes, you Dear. All’s fair in love and cake war.
He smashes the cake slice into her mouth and then leans in to kiss the icing of her face. She shakes her head and then smiles at him.
The crowd erupts into cheers, and then Amanda takes the knife, cuts more slices of cake, and places the pieces on plates. Fellow agents mill around the room. LEATHERNECK and BEAMAN approach the couple. Leatherneck puts his arm around Lee and Amanda.
LEATHERNECK
Congratulations, you two. I just knew Ace, here, would come to his senses and finally settle down.
BEAMAN
We need to throw you a belated bachelor party.
LEATHERNECK
Great idea, Beaman. Let’s ask the missus.
(to Amanda)
Would you be okay if Lee comes out to play?
AMANDA
I can agree to a boy’s night out, but no strippers.
LEATHERNECK
Yes, Ma’am, and we promise to have him home at a reasonable time.
LEE
Excuse me for a second.
He pulls Amanda a few feet away.
LEE
Amanda, really, I don’t need one.
AMANDA
I trust you, plus with all that has happened in the last couple of weeks, I think it would be good to have a night having fun with the guys.
LEE
My night having fun doesn’t involve the guys. I’d rather spend it between the sheets with you.
Amanda blushes.
AMANDA
Ditto, Big Fella. Really, Lee, I think blowing off some steam will help. I’ll be okay; I want you to go have some fun, but not too much fun.
Lee kisses her on the cheek.
LEE
I love you.
AMANDA
Love you, too.
Lee makes an announcement to the people in the room.
LEE
Bachelor party, Nedlinger's, Friday night.
The men in the room yell, ‘Yeah.’
LEE
(serious)
Now, let’s get back to work. Matters of national security await us.
People in the room groan. Lee and Amanda head toward Billy’s office. Lee opens the door for Amanda, who steps through.
INT. BILLY’S OFFICE
DR. AUSTIN SMYTH sits in a far corner conference chair, smoking a cigarette.
LEE
What are you doing here, lurking in Billy’s office?
SMYTH
Relax, Stetson. I would have thought married life would have mellowed you out some.
Lee balls up his fists. Amanda squeezes his shoulder trying to calm him down.
SMYTH (continued)
Didn’t want to interrupt the festivities. However, not too happy with you two presently. I received a phone call last night for an early morning board meeting. Imagine my surprise when I found out it was about your marriage.
(beat)
What happened, the wedding invites get lost in the mail?
(long pause)
The board wanted to discuss your future with the Agency. Despite my objections, the board overruled me; however, there are a few concessions.
AMANDA
Such as?
SMYTH
Always straight to the point aren’t you, King? Or should I say Stetson.
AMANDA
King, for now. I think two Stetsons would be a bit confusing.
SMYTH
Precisely my point.
(beat)
Concession one, no hanky-panky in this office, capisce?
AMANDA
Of course.
SMYTH
Second, as long as you can continue to remain professionals in the office and maintain the Q-Bureau solve rate, you may remain partners in the field, until such time that you want to dissolve your partnership. Are these terms agreeable to you?
LEE
Fair enough.
AMANDA
Yes, Sir.
Dr. Smyth starts to head toward the door, and then turns around.
SMYTH
Ah, before I forget--
He takes out an envelope and hands it to Lee.
SMYTH (continued)
A little something for the newlyweds.
AMANDA
Thank you, Sir.
She leans in to give him a kiss on the cheek.
SMYTH
I thought I told you never to do that again.
AMANDA
You’re right, Sir.
SMYTH
Well, just this once.
She kisses his cheek.
Dr. Smyth has his hand on the doorknob.
SMYTH
By the way, Stetson, you’ve done a good job stepping into Melrose’s shoes. Keep up the good work.
Dr. Smyth exits.
OFF LEE AND AMANDA’S STUNNED LOOKS; we . . .
END OF ACT THREE
ACT FOUR
INT. AGENCY BILLY’S OFFICE – A FEW MOMENTS LATER
Francine enters Billy’s office.
FRANCINE
We just received a report from Metro Police, a man fitting Joseph Kelsey checked into the Windjammer Motel on M Street.
AMANDA
M Street. I didn't know there were any motels in with all of those bars.
FRANCINE
I’m surprised anyone noticed, basically a no-tell motel. Motel clerks turn a blind eye on those who check-in and don’t ask questions, especially if the patron puts down enough cash.
LEE
Tell Metro the Agency has this – it’s our collar.
FRANCINE
Right.
Francine exits.
Lee grabs his suit coat from off the back of his chair and checks his revolver before he holsters it. He then takes Amanda’s hand and they head out of the door and through the bullpen.
QUICK CUT
EXT. WINDJAMMER MOTEL – DAY
The Windjammer Motel is a small motor inn with a central court.
EXT. WINDJAMMER MOTEL – DAY – OUTSIDE JOSEPH KELSEY’S ROOM
Lee and Amanda stand near the door to Joseph Kelsey’s room. Lee knocks. There is no answer. He knocks two more times.
LEE
Open up. Federal Agents.
Lee leans against the door listening for a creak of weight shifting on the floorboards. He hears movement. He counts to three with his fingers, and then whirls and kicks the door inward.
INT. MOTEL ROOM
Lee and Amanda enter the room, guns drawn. A stunned JOSEPH KELSEY is already holding up his hands.
AMANDA
Freeze, Federal Agents. Lay on the bed, face down and put your hands behind your back.
Kelsey complies. Amanda pulls out a pair of handcuffs and she clasps them around his wrists.
Metro Police arrive on the scene.
Lee picks up the suspect and shoves him toward a waiting POLICEMAN.
LEE
Be sure to read him his Miranda rights, I don’t want this one getting off on a technicality.
POLICEMAN
Yes, Sir.
The officer leads Kelsey out of the room.
LEE
It feels good to catch the man responsible for Tony’s death.
AMANDA
Yes, and that'll close out your case. Billy should be back soon, and you can turn the reins back over to him.
LEE
Believe me, I can't wait. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, because I had you to help me, but I just don't think I could do this everyday.
She wraps her arms around him and leans her head against his shoulder.
CUT TO
EXT. AMANDA’S HOUSE – LATER THAT NIGHT
Lee’s Corvette is parked in the street in front of the house.
Camera ZOOMS into kitchen window.
INT. AMANDA’S HOUSE - KITCHEN – NIGHT
Lee and Amanda enter the kitchen. PHILLIP and JAMIE are seen clearing up dinner plates and loading the dishwasher. Dotty comes around the corner and sees them.
DOTTY
Hello, Dears. You’re a little later then I thought you would be. Is everything all right?
AMANDA
Sorry, Mother. We were just wrapping up something at work.
DOTTY
Dinner is warming for you in the oven. Phillip made a tuna casserole, and it was pretty good.
AMANDA
(to Phillip)
That’s great, Phillip.
She tousles his hair.
PHILLIP
Mom!
AMANDA
Sorry. I thought you were done with cooking class.
PHILLIP
I am, but it’s still fun to cook. Is that all right?
AMANDA
It’s more than all right. Lee’s a good cook, too.
PHILLIP
(to Lee)
Could you teach me something you like to cook someday?
LEE
You bet.
AMANDA
What about you, Jamie? How was your day?
JAMIE
(less then thrilled)
Fine.
PHILLIP
Mom, is it okay if I go over to Tommy Morgan's house? He got the new The Legend of Zelda game.
AMANDA
I’m afraid Zelda is going to have to wait until after a family meeting.
The DOORBELL rings.
JAMIE
I’ll get it.
He rushes out of the room.
JAMIE (O.C.)
Dad, what are you doing here?
JOE (O.C.)
Your mother invited me.
JOSEPH KING along with Jamie enter the crowded kitchen.
AMANDA
Hello, Sweetheart. Thanks for coming.
She gives Joe a kiss on the cheek. Then Lee shakes Joe’s hand, which he returns.
LEE
Joe.
JOE
Lee.
AMANDA
Why don’t we meet in the family room where it is a little less crowded? It’s time for a family meeting.
DOTTY
You and Lee go on; I’ll bring you your dinner plates in a second.
AMANDA
Thanks, Mother.
Everyone except Dotty heads toward the family room. Phillip and Jamie give each other nervous glances.
INT. FAMILY ROOM
AMANDA
Okay, Joe, Fellas, you sit here on the sofa.
Joe and the boys sit down.
JAMIE
(panic)
What’s going on, Mom? You aren’t running from those federal agents again, are you?
AMANDA
No, Sweetheart. Lee and I are not in trouble.
(beat)
However, I’m glad you brought up federal agents. . .
PHILLIP
Mom, you’re scaring us.
AMANDA
Fellas, really it’s okay. It’s good news, depending on how you take it.
Phillip and Jamie exchange another glance.
PHILLIP
Huh?
AMANDA
Let me start over again. Do you remember the broken music box you opened that was supposed to be mailed to Aunt Minnie?
They both shrug. Dotty enters the family room and puts two plates down on the coffee table, and then sits down in a wingback chair across from the sofa.
AMANDA
Inside were clues to help an Agency investigation.
PHILLIP
Agency? As in spies?
LEE
Actually, we don’t say ‘spies.’
AMANDA
Lee and I prefer intelligence operatives.
CLOSE ON PHILLIP AND JAMIE
PHILLIP
You’re spies?!
JAMIE
No way!
Phillip looks at his dad who is not surprised by the news.
PHILLIP
You knew?
Joe nods his head.
JOE
Yes, I know what your mother and Lee really do for a living.
(beat)
Remember when I came back home and was being framed for a murder I did not commit?
The boys nod their heads.
JOE (continued)
Your mother and Lee helped clear my name. Think about when that man named Prescott tried to grab you guys at the gym, and the federal agent saved you.
A long pause.
JAMIE
Lee. That was Lee.
JOE
Yes.
PHILLIP
(to Lee)
You saved us.
AMANDA
Lee has been watching over you two for a long time.
PHILLIP
Why are you telling us all this now?
AMANDA
Well, first, we believe you are old enough and mature enough to handle the news.
LEE
Now, I will tell you what I told your mother when she first found out I was a spy.
PHILLIP
Intelligent operative.
LEE
(chuckles)
Correct, Phillip. For your protection, and your mother’s and my safety, you cannot mention this to anyone. Not your friends at school, not the neighbors, no one. Do I make myself clear?
Phillip and Jamie look at each other and then nod their heads.
AMANDA
Good. Now, to the outside world, Lee and I are documentary filmmakers.
JAMIE
The broken music box—that was like five years ago. You’ve known each other that long?
AMANDA
That is correct, Jamie. That brings up the second item of discussion.
She reaches out and takes Lee’s hand and she squeezes it.
AMANDA (continued)
Lee and I have known each other for a lot longer then what you know. When I first started working at the Agency I was a part-time civilian employee. However, the longer I was there, the more involved I became, and eventually became a full-time operative and Lee’s partner.
(beat)
On a personal note, over time, Lee and I became best friends and then we realized we were falling in love.
LEE
But you guys did not know me, and we couldn’t come out with the true nature of our work. So, we took things slowly, but I loved your mother so much I asked her to marry me, and she graciously said yes.
PHILLIP
So you guys are engaged?
AMANDA
Not exactly. Lee and I are married.
JOE
You’re what?!
PHILLIP
You guys got married?
JAMIE
You lied to us!
LEE
Yes, we lied, but only for your own good.
PHILLIP
You didn’t trust us? I can’t believe you got married behind our backs. I’m not sure I can ever trust you again.
AMANDA
Please, Fellas. Don’t be like this.
LEE
I worry about you – all of you. I don’t know what I would do if something happened to your mother, or grandmother, or either one of you boys.
AMANDA
We both love you, and at the time we really thought we were doing what was best for your protection. That is why we've gone through such elaborate means to keep our profession, as well as our marriage, a secret.
PHILLIP
Does this mean Lee’s moving in?
AMANDA
Yes, but only when everyone is more comfortable with having him live here.
The boys glance at each other.
AMANDA (continued)
I know this is a lot to handle all at once. Do you want to talk about it?
PHILLIP
Mom, would it be okay if Jamie and I were excused?
AMANDA
Yes, of course.
PHILLIP
Thanks for coming Dad. See you next weekend.
JOE
Goodnight, Phillip, Jamie.
The boys exit.
JOE
Well, I had better go home myself.
He stands up and shakes Lee’s hand.
JOE
Congrats, Lee.
(beat)
Please, take good care of them.
LEE
I will.
Joe then gives Amanda a hug.
JOE
I’m happy for you.
AMANDA
I’m happy for you. Carrie is a wonderful woman.
JOE
I’ll see myself out.
(beat)
Goodnight, Dotty.
DOTTY
Night, Joe.
Joe shakes his head and exits.
DOTTY
I’ll leave you two alone. I’m sure you have a lot to talk about.
(beat)
Goodnight, Dears.
AMANDA
Goodnight, Mother.
LEE
Goodnight, Dotty.
Dotty exits.
LEE
Come here.
He holds out his arms and Amanda steps into his embrace.
LEE (continued)
Didn’t I tell you the secrets and lies would end soon? Teach you never to doubt me.
AMANDA
I never doubted you for a moment.
Lee raises his eyebrow.
LEE
It’s going to be hard giving up the apartment and giving up some of the privacy we have enjoyed.
AMANDA
You don’t want to move in.
LEE
I’d move in this evening, if I thought the boys were okay with it. I am looking forward to having us all living under the same roof.
(beat)
Revealing all our secrets went better then I thought.
AMANDA
(sighs heavily)
Do you think Phillip and Jamie are ever going to forgive us for all our lies?
LEE
They’ll come around.
(beat)
We have a great family there.
AMANDA
Yes, yes we do.
(beat)
I love you, Lee Stetson.
Lee leans over and initiates a passionate kiss and we. . . FREEZE FRAME
END OF ACT FOUR
TAG
EXT. LEE’S APARTMENT – NIGHT
Lee’s Corvette and Amanda’s Wagoneer are parked on the street in front of Lee’s apartment building.
INT. LEE’S APARTMENT – NIGHT
Lee and Amanda are snuggled together on the couch. Two half empty wine glasses are on the coffee table in front of them.
LEE
You’re awfully quiet tonight, Mrs. Stetson. What's on your mind?
AMANDA
Nothing.
LEE
Nothing? You were a million miles away.
AMANDA
I was just thinking.
LEE
I gathered as much. What about?
AMANDA
Still thinking about the choices we made.
LEE
A-man-da.
AMANDA
No, hear me out. Our lives are full of choices; choosing to marry Joe, choosing to stay in Arlington and not moving to Africa, choosing to divorce Joe, and then choosing to help a desperate stranger at a train station. . . all these choices led me to where I am today, here in your arms, and there’s no place I’d rather be.
LEE
No regrets?
Amanda shakes her head.
AMANDA
I wouldn't change a thing.
(beat)
Well, expect, maybe, sharing our wedding day with our family and friends.
He caresses her cheek lovingly.
LEE
Do you know how much I love you?
AMANDA
Remind me.
They share a very heated kiss. After a beat, a BEEPING sound comes from Lee’s pocket. They quickly part.
LEE
(rolls his eyes)
Normal people hear bells.
He removes his pager from his pocket. He looks at the pager, then reaches behind him and grabs the phone receiver, putting it back on the hook before dialing a number.
LEE
This is Scarecrow. . . thanks, Francine. . . see you tomorrow. . . yes, I’ll tell her. Goodnight.
He hangs up the phone.
AMANDA
What did Francine want?
LEE
Nothing that can’t wait until tomorrow.
He pulls Amanda close to him.
LEE (continued)
Now, where were we?
AMANDA
Right here.
They kiss again, then pull back, and grin. Off their smiles. . . FREEZE FRAME
