PROLOGUE
EXT. OLD WAREHOUSE BUILDING – DAY
The scene opens with several cars pulling up in front of an old warehouse in a less than desirable part of Washington, D.C. Several agents exit out of the cars. One is carrying a door ram. They flank both sides of the building. We also see FRANCINE, AMANDA, and agents, TONY NESHEIM and CHARLES BACHMAN.
Francine and Amanda are standing next to one entrance, while Tony and Charles are standing near another entrance.
ON FRANCINE AND AMANDA
AMANDA
(to Francine)
Be careful.
FRANCINE
You, too.
Francine nods her head, and checks her weapon. She motions to Amanda to stay back. Amanda steps to the side against the wall, her gun drawn also.
WIDEN SHOT
Francine then holds up three fingers and the other agents nod in understanding. She counts down to zero and then mouths ‘go,’ and the agents quickly enter the building, guns drawn.
FRANCINE (O.C.)
Freeze, Federal Agents.
GUNFIRE erupts somewhere inside the warehouse.
The CAMERA is focused on the building exterior. We do not see the action inside. There is more GUNFIRE exchanged.
FRANCINE (O.C.)
Amanda, watch out!
SHOTS ring out again and more shouting. Sounds like the agents are in the middle of a battle. Finally, the shooting stops.
FRANCINE (O.C.)
(filtered; over walkie-talkie)
I need an ambulance, now!
(beat)
Agent down!
QUICK CUT
ACT ONE
GRAPHIC: ONE WEEK EARLIER
EXT. AMANDA’S HOUSE - MORNING
CLOSE on the 4247 sign.
LEE pulls the Corvette up to the curb alongside Amanda’s house. Amanda opens the door to the house and motions to him she’ll be another minute. Chaos reigns at the King house. PHILLIP and JAMIE are grabbing backpacks and lunch sacks.
AMANDA
Mother, I'll be home in time for dinner.
PHILLIP
Is Lee joining us for dinner?
AMANDA
Yeah, I think so.
PHILLIP
Great, I can beat him at basketball again.
He grabs his skateboard and steps outside.
EXT. AMANDA’S HOUSE
Phillip waves at Lee and then heads toward the Jeep. Lee returns the gesture.
INT. AMANDA’S HOUSE
Amanda tussles Jamie’s hair.
AMANDA
What about you Jamie, are you going to play basketball with your brother and Lee?
JAMIE
(cold)
Whatever.
(beat)
Bye, Grandma. Bye, Mom.
EXT. AMANDA’S HOUSE
He goes outside, shrugs his backpack further over his shoulder and walks down the walkway without looking in Lee’s direction.
Lee tries to get Jamie’s attention, but sees the boy is ignoring him. He sighs.
A moment later, DOTTY comes to the doorway and waves to Lee, who waves back.
INT. AMANDA’S HOUSE
DOTTY
We missed you last night. When did Lee get you home?
AMANDA
It was late. I’m glad you didn't wait up for me.
(beat)
But I’m looking forward to a nice dinner this evening—as a family.
DOTTY
Amanda, may I ask you a question?
AMANDA
Of course, Mother.
DOTTY
I'm only asking because I am concerned about you. And Lee.
(beat)
But when are you two going to get serious?
ON AMANDA
AMANDA
We’re just dating--
DOTTY
He’s great for the boys and a wonderful role model.
AMANDA:
Moth-er.
Dotty gives her an ‘I’m not pressuring you look.’
AMANDA (continued)
Can we table the discussion for now? Lee’s waiting. I have to go.
DOTTY
Fine, go. Heaven forbid should you think I am trying to tell you how to live your life.
Amanda rolls her eyes, shakes her head and heads out the door.
EXT. AMANDA'S HOUSE
She walks down the steps toward Lee’s car, then stops and turns back to Dotty.
AMANDA
(calls out)
Don't worry; we won't be late for dinner.
INT. AMANDA'S HOUSE
Dotty shuts the door and leans against it.
DOTTY
(to herself; mumbling)
Wish I had a dollar for every time she told me she wouldn't be late!
EXT. CORVETTE
Lee gets out of the car and opens the door for Amanda. Amanda gets in the car. Lee shuts the door and walks around the rear of the car before he gets in on the driver’s side.
INT. CORVETTE - TRAVELING
LEE
Jamie blew me off again today.
AMANDA
I’m sorry, Sweetheart.
LEE
Every time I feel I take a step forward in the right direction, he takes two steps back.
AMANDA
He’ll warm up to you. Just give him time.
LEE
When, Amanda, when?
Amanda reaches over, takes his hand and gently squeezes it.
AMANDA
Only Jamie knows the answer to that one.
QUICK CUT
EXT. AGENCY – GEORGETOWN ENTRANCE – DAY
The Corvette pulls up to the front of the building and drives into the garage.
CAMERA ZOOMS onto the IFF sign.
INT. AGENCY – HALLWAY CORRIDOR – DAY
Lee and Amanda come off the elevator and walk down the hallway toward the Bullpen. They both briefly nod at the two Marines standing guard outside the door. Lee has his hand on the small of Amanda’s back. They step toward the coffee station.
BILLY steps out of his office door and sees his two agents.
BILLY
Stetson. King.
Both Amanda and Lee look over at their boss.
BILLY
We had to push up the morning meeting by a half hour. I’ll need you two in the conference room in ten minutes.
AMANDA
Yes, Sir.
LEE
So much for a quiet morning.
He grabs a couple coffee cups, and pours himself and Amanda some coffee. He stirs sugar into Amanda’s cup and passes it on to her, then pours a little cream into his cup and takes a sip.
FRANCINE sees Lee and Amanda and hurries over toward them.
FRANCINE
Well look who decided to arrive on time this morning, the resident lovers.
(beat)
Or should I say P.I.M.W.T.O.?
LEE
What?
FRANCINE
(a little slower; spelling it out)
P. I. M. W. T. O.
LEE
Is that a new government agency?
FRANCINE
(smiles)
No.
(beat; punctuating each word)
Partners. In. More. Ways. Than. One.
AMANDA
Francine, please.
FRANCINE
Just a little joke I made up.
Francine makes herself a cup of coffee.
FRANCINE
This is the third time this week you two have arrived together. People are talking.
AMANDA
Really, it’s quite innocent. Mother needs the Jeep to take the boys to their activities, so Lee has been picking me up.
FRANCINE
Wouldn’t it be better if you were living under the same roof? That way Lee wouldn't have to drive all the way from Georgetown to Arlington and back to Georgetown. After all, you two are now marr--
Francine stops when she sees Billy heading toward them.
FRANCINE
Ummm. . . mar. . . marinade.
BILLY
What are we talking about?
FRANCINE
I was asking Amanda for a good chicken marinade. I have a date tomorrow night and he loves chicken.
AMANDA
Ur. . . yes, lemon pepper is one of my favorites.
(beat)
Hello, Sir.
BILLY
Hello, Amanda.
(beat)
Are there any more of those bear claws left?
AMANDA
No, looks like they are all gone.
BILLY
Darn. Oh well, that is what happens when you are on the phone all morning.
LEE
What’s going on? Why the change of time for the staff meeting?
BILLY
All I can say at the moment is this comes directly from the White House.
AMANDA
Sounds big.
BILLY
I think the senior agents are all here, so why don’t we all meet in the conference room.
Billy, Francine, Amanda, and Lee walk across the Bullpen, headed toward the conference room.
INT. CONFERENCE ROOM
Other agents join in, including Tony and Charles (who we met earlier).
BILLY
Listen up, people. . .
Chatter in the room ends and the agents look at their section chief.
BILLY (continued)
With the upcoming elections next year, the President has initiated Fall Harvest.
Several agents groan and grumble.
AMANDA
(whispers to Lee)
What is Fall Harvest?
LEE
(whispers)
It’s similar to Spring Cleaning, although Fall Harvest usually only happens in presidential election cycles.
Amanda nods her head.
BILLY
Right. You will each be assigned organizations to gather intel on and report anything suspicious to the lead agent.
(beat)
Francine, I want you in charge of this project. Assign other agents their tasks and supervise.
FRANCINE
Why are you laying this on me?
BILLY
Because you are always looking for opportunities to prove yourself.
FRANCINE
Maybe I should just learn to keep my mouth shut.
Amanda gives her a look of sympathy. Francine begins to go through the file folders and sorts them.
BILLY
Do you think you can have the assignment list ready to go by noon?
FRANCINE
Yes, I believe so.
BILLY
Good.
(beat)
One more thing on the agenda. . .
Billy opens the lid on a box in front of him. He then takes out a portable communication device. It is wrapped in a rubber band with a piece of paper slipped underneath.
There is more grumbling from those in the room.
BILLY (continued)
I know some of you already know what this is, but for those who do not; this is a pager. Each of you will receive one and on the attached piece of paper is the phone number associated with your pager. When the Agency needs to reach you, we will page your number and you will receive a beep. If the display reads 911—it means to respond back to the Agency without question.
AMANDA
Like Zulu Blue.
BILLY
Exactly.
(beat)
Some of you are hard to reach when you are out in the field, so we hope this will help us stay in communication with you. Any questions?
He starts to hand out the pagers to those in the room.
BILLY
Everyone set? Good. See Ms. Desmond for your Fall Harvest assignments sometime today, and let’s hit the streets. Be safe out there.
Agents get up and begin to filter out of the room. Amanda stops near Francine.
AMANDA
Francine, are you going to need any help with those?
FRANCINE
Thanks for the offer, Amanda, but I think I got it.
AMANDA
Okay. If you change your mind, Lee and I will be upstairs in the Q-Bureau.
FRANCINE
Make sure you give Lee a kiss for me.
AMANDA
Francine, please.
Amanda exits.
FRANCINE
(smug)
Sometimes it’s just too easy.
QUICK CUT
INT. Q-BUREAU – A FEW MINUTES LATER
Amanda enters the Q-Bureau at the same time Lee comes out of the vault. She walks over to him and puts her hands around his waist.
AMANDA
Hello, Sweetheart. Francine asked me to pass something along to you.
He tilts his head.
LEE
And what would that be?
Amanda gives Lee a kiss on the cheek.
LEE
Is that all I get?
AMANDA
That is all you get from Francine.
She winks at him.
LEE
(like a little child)
I hope that we can get Fall Harvest done before Friday night.
(beat)
Joe has the boys this weekend, right?
AMANDA
(teasing)
Why, did we have plans?
She takes a step back, but Lee quickly grabs her and pulls her close to him. She squeals.
LEE
(husky voice)
Oh, yeah. I have plans to spend the whole weekend alone—with my wife. I’m thinking a drive in the country, maybe renting a cabin in the woods, a crackling fire, a nice bottle of Cabernet. . .
(beat)
I should see if Crump’s cabin is available this weekend.
Amanda holds up a key.
AMANDA
Already ahead of you there, Mr. Stetson.
LEE
Have I told you I love you today?
Amanda shakes her head.
LEE (continued)
A terrible oversight on my part.
AMANDA
Yes, it is.
LEE
I love you, Mrs. Stetson.
He dips his head to touch her lips again. At the sound of a knock at the door, they spring apart guiltily. Lee rolls his eyes.
LEE (continued)
I'm getting too old for this.
Amanda tries to hide a smile, as Lee strolls to the door and jerks it open.
BILLY
May I come in?
LEE
Sure, we were um just. . . ahhh. . .
BILLY
Save it.
LEE
What can we do for you, Billy?
BILLY
I’m pulling you two off as available agents for Fall Harvest.
LEE
You’re taking us off Fall Harvest? Why do I have a feeling we’re not going to like this one bit.
BILLY
Stow it, Scarecrow.
Billy takes out a piece of paper from his pocket.
BILLY (continued)
This just came in and I need you two to check it out.
He hands the memo to Lee.
AMANDA
What’s it about?
BILLY
A whistle blower. His name is Stan Cooper, and he called in about Jensen-Clark Pharmaceuticals. He believes the company is tampering with influenza vaccines. With the Tylenol poisonings of a few years back, we have to take these reports seriously. Check out his story and see if there is any credibility to it.
(beat)
He’s already requesting witness protection for him and his family. He’s very skittish, so handle him carefully.
(another beat)
I have already talked to the Justice Department, and they said if his story is credible, bring him and his family to them. For now, keep this story hush-hush. Don’t need panic in the streets over nothing.
AMANDA
We’ll do it, Sir.
BILLY
For now, this is a priority one case.
(beat)
Lee, Amanda, keep me informed and good luck.
Billy exits and Lee shuts the door.
AMANDA
Where do you want to start first?
LEE
I think we’ll start with some preliminary research. Maybe talk to T.P. See what he knows about Jensen-Clark Pharmaceuticals.
Lee grabs Amanda’s coat from the coat rack and helps her into it, then puts on his own.
LEE (continued)
Shall we, Dear?
AMANDA
You bet.
Lee places his hand at the small of her back and leads her out the Film Library door.
CLOSE on door; we. . .
END OF ACT ONE
ACT TWO
EXT. ULYSSES GREEK RESTAURANT – DAY
The Corvette is parked in the street in front of a restaurant. ZOOM into window.
INT. ULYSSES GREEK RESTAURANT – DAY
Lee and Amanda enter through the threshold of the main dining area, and see T. PERCIVAL AQUINAS sitting at a booth along the far wall. A WAITRESS approaches them.
WAITRESS
Table for two?
LEE
No, we are meeting a friend and I see him over there.
Lee and Amanda then head toward T.P.’s table. He looks up and sees them approach.
T.P.
(Hello in Greek)
Yah su, Mrs. King, Lee.
(beat)
Won’t you sit down and join me for lunch. Mrs. King, I suggest you try the Shrimp De Jonghe. Ulysses uses just the right amount of garlic.
(another beat)
Sit, Lee, Amanda. My treat.
Lee looks over at Amanda, who shrugs, and then they sit down. T.P. gets the attention of the waitress.
T.P.
Aella, two more menus.
She comes over to the booth and places two menus down on the table.
WAITRESS
Can I get you anything to drink?
AMANDA
Just water for me.
LEE
Me, too.
WAITRESS
Okay. Anything else for you, Mr. Aquinas?
T.P.
No, thanks, Aella.
The waitress leaves.
T.P.
What can I do for you today, other than offer you lunch?
LEE
Are you familiar with Jensen-Clark Pharmaceuticals?
T.P. thinks about it for a moment.
T.P.
Let’s see, Jensen-Clark develops, produces, and markets a variety of medications. They are one of the smaller drug manufacturers in the United States; however, they have recently acquired a couple of startup biotechnology companies.
T.P. takes a sip of his wine. The waitress returns to the booth and places down two glasses of water and a small bowl with fresh cut lemons.
WAITRESS
I thought you might like some lemon for your water.
AMANDA
Thank you.
The waitress takes out an order pad.
WAITRESS
Are you ready to order?
Amanda quickly scans the menu, but Lee places his hand on hers, and then orders for them.
LEE
We’ll each have a side salad, ranch dressing for me, and the lady will have thousand island, and I think we’ll split the Seafood Pasta.
T.P.
Excellent choice, Leezo.
WAITRESS
I’ll be right back with your salads and meal.
She exits.
T.P.
Getting back to what we were discussing. Jensen-Clark is headquartered in Arlington and their main distribution center is there, too.
(beat; takes another sip of wine)
They took a big gamble on purchasing those biotechnology companies. They could lose their shirt.
(another beat)
Did you know successful drugs sales equate to a multi-million dollar profit?
LEE
(whistles)
Have you heard any rumors or grumblings? Any trouble?
T.P.
No, not that I heard, but I will keep my ear to the ground for you.
The waitress returns with their orders and then leaves.
AMANDA
It certainly looks interesting.
T.P.
Enjoy, Lee, Amanda.
Both Lee and Amanda dig into their meals.
CUT TO
EXT. WASHINGTON NATIONAL MALL – EARLY EVENING
Rain gently falls on the grounds.
INT. SMITHSONIAN NATIONAL AIR AND SPACE MUSEUM – EARLY EVENING
The CAMERA focuses on a man, STAN COOPER. He is standing in the "Milestones of Flight" gallery area, and reading about the Wright Brothers flyer, when Lee and Amanda approach him.
AMANDA
Excuse me, Sir, would you mind taking a picture of my husband and me in front of the airplane?
STAN
I would be happy to do that for you.
She hands him the camera and Lee and Amanda pose, while he takes their picture. He hands her the camera back.
AMANDA
Thank you, very much.
(more quietly)
Stan Cooper, my name is Amanda King, and this is my partner, Lee Stetson. We talked on the phone.
STAN
They’re watching. They have eyes and ears everywhere.
LEE
Who?
STAN
Jensen-Clark.
(beat)
They used to be a small family-run company. Never had any problems there, well, that was before they bought out those biotech companies. It's all about corporate greed now since Mr. Kelsey took over.
(another beat)
They have hired goons who watch our every move. I’m afraid for my family. I have two little girls; they are only five and three years old.
Removing his wallet from his back pocket, he takes out a picture of his two little girls, showing it to Amanda.
STAN
The older one is Madeline, and the baby is Kayla.
AMANDA
Beautiful girls you have there.
She hands the picture back to Stan.
STAN
I want protection for my family and me.
LEE
And you’ll get it. Now what can you tell us?
STAN
The company may have purposely contaminated the influenza vaccines with the Avian flu virus.
Lee and Amanda look at him in confusion.
STAN
The ‘bird flu.’
LEE
(nods)
Ahhh.
STAN
I believe the company wants to start an epidemic in order to spur sales of other drugs they manufacture. They are mass-producing Avian-flu drugs, in the event of a global pandemic.
AMANDA
Are you sure?
STAN
Yes.
LEE
How many vials do you believe were tampered with?
STAN
I’m not sure. I’m more research and development than distribution, but I would guess a couple hundred batches.
LEE
And if the elderly take their yearly flu shot, they might get sick.
AMANDA
It’s more then just the elderly, Lee. You also have young children, pregnant women, people with low immune systems, and people in the armed services.
STAN
And health care providers.
(beat)
Millions of flu shots are administered each year.
LEE
How dangerous is it?
STAN
The virus is similar to those of influenza. Symptoms can include fever, cough, headache, sore throat, body aches, chills, and fatigue. People can die from the flu. The most common cause of death is respiratory failure and pneumonia. Fatalities are more likely in young children and the elderly.
(beat; he looks around)
So, do we have a deal?
LEE
Yes, I think so.
(beat)
Go home and pack, but only the essentials. I will have an Agency car sitting outside your house tonight and then tomorrow night, my partner and I will come by with a Suburban, which I will borrow from the Motor Pool. We will take you to the U.S. Marshall’s safe house.
(another beat)
Now, for the safety of you and your family, do not breathe a word of this to anyone. No phone calls, no letters, nothing. Do I make myself clear?
Stan shakes Lee’s hand and then Amanda’s.
STAN
Yes, I understand and thank you.
Stan exits.
AMANDA
What do you think? Could they have tampered with the vaccines?
LEE
He thinks something's wrong, and I've learned over the years that you just have to sometimes follow your gut.
QUICK CUT
EXT. LEE’S APARTMENT – MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT
Nighttime and Lee’s Corvette is parked in front of the apartment building.
INT. LEE’S APARTMENT – MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT
Lee is asleep in his bed. He is alone. He begins to toss and turn in his sleep.
EXT. ROAD (LEE’S DREAM) – NIGHT
An old Chevy travels down the road.
IN THE CAR
Lee sees the faces of his parents, right before the accident that takes their lives. Suddenly bright headlights shine into the car blinding them.
ON CAR
He sees the car tumble down an embankment.
ROADSIDE
The Chevy comes to rest upside down in a ditch, burning.
Then Lee sees himself, at five years old, standing at the shoulder of the road. He’s staring down at the mangled car and bodies of his parents, but instead of his mom and dad, he sees Amanda lying dead beside the car. . .
INT. LEE’S APARTMENT – MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT
Lee wakes with a start. He quickly turns on the lamp on his nightstand, takes a moment to control his breathing, and realizes he has been dreaming.
LEE
Not again.
Off Lee’s astonished look we. . .
EXT. AMANDA’S HOUSE – (NEXT DAY) MORNING
Lee is standing outside on the front porch. He knocks on the door. Jamie opens the door and Lee steps in.
INT. FRONT ENTRY
LEE
Hello, Jamie. Is your mother ready?
He shrugs his shoulders, but does not say anything.
LEE (continued)
Are you looking forward to your weekend with your dad?
Jamie pushes up his glasses.
JAMIE
I guess.
LEE
What are you guys doing this weekend?
JAMIE
We’re going to Baltimore to see the final home game of the Orioles.
LEE
Sounds fun.
Jamie shrugs his shoulders again.
JAMIE
I have to finish getting ready for school.
He turns to leave.
LEE
Good talking with you, Jamie.
Jamie exits, and Dotty enters the room.
DOTTY
Oh, Lee. I didn’t know you were here. Amanda stepped out for a moment, something about needing cream for your coffee. She should be back in a moment. Won’t you keep me company in the kitchen?
They both head toward the kitchen.
INT. KITCHEN
DOTTY
Instead of coffee, how about I offer you a glass of orange juice? It’s freshly squeezed.
LEE
Sure, that sounds good.
Dotty pours Lee a glass of juice.
DOTTY
Lee, can I ask you a question?
LEE
(nervous)
Sure. Go ahead.
He takes a sip of juice and observes her.
DOTTY
Are you married?
Lee spits out the juice all over the counter.
LEE
What?!!
Dotty grabs a rag and cleans up the mess.
DOTTY
I’m just trying to figure out your relationship with my daughter. You are a conundrum. I know you love Amanda and she loves you, and you have gone out of your way to get to know the boys, and me, yet there has been no hint of you two getting married. Is it because Amanda is a package deal?
LEE
No, I love you and the boys.
DOTTY
Then what are you waiting for?
LEE
It’s complicated.
DOTTY
What’s complicated?
(beat)
Is it your work?
LEE
You could say that is part of it.
Dotty gives him an ‘I’m waiting for an explanation’ look.
DOTTY
You don't think your boss would let the two of you continue to work together, if you were married? That’s discrimination.
Amanda comes into the kitchen through the backdoor, carrying a small grocery sack.
AMANDA
Hello, Sweetheart. Sorry, I thought I would be back before you got here, but the lines at Zippy Mart were long this morning.
She takes out the half-and-half and places it on the counter.
AMANDA (continued)
Could I get you a cup of coffee?
He shakes his head.
AMANDA (continued)
Is something wrong?
He shakes his head again.
AMANDA (continued)
Mother, what did you do to him?
DOTTY
Nothing.
AMANDA
Lee and I will be working late this evening, so don’t expect me home.
DOTTY
Whatever you say, Dear.
(beat)
Think about what I said, Lee.
Amanda and Lee head toward the base of the stairs.
INT. FOYER
AMANDA
Fellas, I’m leaving for work.
The two boys come running down the stairs. She gives each a kiss on the cheek. Lee looks anxious to leave.
AMANDA (continued)
Have a good time with your dad—see you Sunday night. Love you.
PHILLIP/JAMIE
(unison)
Love you, too.
PHILLIP
Bye, Mom. Bye, Lee.
LEE
See you guys later.
Jamie just grunts. Lee takes Amanda’s hand and they head out the front door together.
EXT. FRONT YARD
Lee quickly drags Amanda outside and down the walkway toward the Corvette.
AMANDA
What was that all about inside with my mother?
LEE
Later.
AMANDA
What did she say to you?
LEE
Let’s just say, your mother could give KGB interrogators lessons.
Amanda tries to hide her smile, as Lee opens the door for her.
INT. CORVETTE
CLOSE ON AMANDA
She sits in the car and shakes her head. Off her expression; we. . .
END OF ACT TWO
ACT THREE
EXT. LEE’S APARTMENT – EARLY MORNING
We see Lee’s Corvette and Amanda’s Jeep parked out front of the apartment building. The camera ZOOMS in through the apartment window.
INT. LEE’S APARTMENT – EARLY MORNING
The sun is just coming up, and in the half-shadows, we see Lee and Amanda snuggled close together in bed. Lee’s eyes open and he blinks a couple of times and then looks down at Amanda. A mischievous grin crosses his face. His arms already around her, he tightens his grip, and then he pulls her hair back from her face and kisses her cheek, moving down to her jaw and then her neck. She turns toward him, a big grin on her face.
AMANDA
Good morning.
LEE
Morning.
(beat)
Sleep well?
AMANDA
Great, after someone finally let me fall asleep.
LEE
I wasn’t hearing any complaints last night.
AMANDA
And you won’t hear any from me now.
Lee raises an eyebrow.
LEE
Oh, yeah?
She smiles and reaches up to touch his face with her hand.
AMANDA
Yep, no complaints here. Sorry we missed out on Crump’s cabin, again, but glad we were able to safely deliver Stan and his family to the Justice Department.
(beat)
What happens to them now?
LEE
They’re in protective custody and soon they'll get new identities to keep them safe from any fallout from Jensen-Clark.
AMANDA
And the CDC has been informed about the contaminated vials.
LEE
Yes, they will conduct an investigation. It’s in their court now.
AMANDA
So, what do you have planned for us today?
Lee leans over and whispers into Amanda’s ear.
AMANDA
Oh. . . and you think you’re up for that, do ya?
Lee initiates a passionate kiss, he pulls back to gauge her reaction, then leans in to kiss her again when the PAGER on the nightstand begins to vibrate.
LEE
What the hell?
AMANDA
It’s your pager, Lee. You must have put it on vibrate.
Lee looks over at the pager, and then back to Amanda. They both groan and then reluctantly pull apart. He picks it up.
INSERT
Pager display reads 911.
BACK TO SCENE
LEE
Looks like we have an emergency at the Agency. Let me make a phone call and see what’s up.
(beat)
Can’t believe we were interrupted again. Just once, I would like to make love to my wife without all the interruptions.
(grumbling to himself)
There was a reason why I left the phone off the hook.
He looks over at Amanda who has gotten out of bed and is now wearing her bathrobe.
AMANDA
I’ll make us some coffee.
She leaves. Lee reaches over and grabs the telephone off his nightstand.
LEE
(phone)
This is Scarecrow.
(beat)
Yes, I’ll hold.
(another beat)
Francine. . . wait, slow down. . . he’s where? What’s his condition? Okay, Amanda and I will be there in a few minutes.
Amanda sticks her head through the doorway. She sees Lee is quite pale.
AMANDA
What’s wrong?
LEE
It’s Billy. He was hit by a car this morning.
Off Amanda’s stunned reaction and we. . .
QUICK CUT
EXT. PARKER GENERAL HOSPITAL – ESTABLISHING - DAY
The front entrance of a hospital, camera ZOOMS on hospital sign.
INT. NURSE’S STATION – DAY
Lee and Amanda quickly walk down the hospital corridor toward the nurse’s station. They talk to a NURSE who is standing there.
LEE
Billy Melrose was brought in earlier.
NURSE
(hesitates)
I’m not sure we have anyone here by that name. Let me check with administration.
LEE
We are federal agents with the Agency and the password is Eagle Scout.
They both take out their federal I.D.s. The nurse checks them.
AMANDA
Any word on how he is?
NURSE
He’s still in surgery.
(beat)
Some of your fellow agents are down the hall in the waiting room. The doctor should be with you shortly.
AMANDA
Thank you.
INT. HOSPITAL WAITING ROOM – DAY
Lee and Amanda come around the corner and see Francine, JEANIE, FRANK DUFFY and a couple other federal agents milling around inside the waiting room. Francine sees them first.
FRANCINE
Lee, Amanda, glad you could make it.
LEE
I went to Amanda’s house to pick her up and came over here as soon as we heard the news.
Francine smiles knowingly.
LEE (continued)
Any news?
Francine shakes her head. Jeanie stands up and gives them both a hug.
AMANDA
How are you holding up?
JEANIE
As good as can be expected.
LEE
(to Francine)
What happened?
JEANIE
Billy said he just needed to run to the Agency for about an hour this morning. He was crossing the street when he was hit by a car.
LEE
(to Francine)
What do we know about the driver?
FRANCINE
This is not Agency related. The driver of the car was questioned and immediately released, although I believe he will be facing an infraction for inattentive driving.
(beat)
Tourist, lost, not watching where he was going. He didn’t see Billy in the crosswalk until it was too late.
AMANDA
Oh, my gosh.
LEE
(finding his voice)
How bad?
FRANCINE
He was conscious when they brought him in, but obviously in a lot of pain.
(beat)
Thank goodness the driver had slowed down to make a turn or it could have been fatal.
She nods toward Agent Duffy.
FRANCINE (continued)
Duffy was the first one to him and I know he talked to Billy.
A DOCTOR, dressed in surgical scrubs emerges from the Trauma Unit doors
FRANCINE
There’s one of the N.E.S.T. doctors now.
(beat)
How is he?
DOCTOR
He’s pretty banged up; he has a concussion, cuts, bruises, and a head laceration, bruised kidney, couple cracked ribs, and a broken femur. The surgeon set his leg.
(beat)
He should make a full recovery, although he will be out of commission for several weeks.
JEANIE
Thank God. When can I see him?
DOCTOR
He’s in recovery and still groggy from the anesthesia. When he is moved to a private room, you can see him then.
AMANDA
Thank you, Doctor.
Lee puts his arm around Jeanie. He is quite relieved, too.
LEE
He’s going to be just fine.
Jeanie nods her head and we . . .
QUICK CUT
INT. BILLY’S ROOM – SEVERAL HOURS LATER
Lee enters Billy’s room. Against the wall is a hospital bed with the usual items we would see in a hospital room. Billy is lying in the bed, his leg in traction. Billy’s eyes are closed and Lee turns around to leave again.
BILLY
I’m awake, Scarecrow.
LEE
Didn’t look awake to me.
BILLY
Just resting my eyes. Damn pain pills have me in a fog.
LEE
Other than that, how do you feel?
BILLY
Like I was hit by a car.
He tries to laugh, but it hurts.
BILLY (continued)
Glad you are here, Lee. I need to ask you a favor.
LEE
(shrugs)
What can I do for you, Billy?
BILLY
I need you to take over field section while I am out of commission.
LEE
Me? Why not Francine?
BILLY
She’s still busy with Fall Harvest. Besides, I think it’s time you handled some more management responsibilities.
(beat)
You really have turned the Q-Bureau around the three years you have been in charge.
LEE
A lot of that is Amanda.
Billy shakes his head.
BILLY
Amanda has been good for you, she’s helped you become a better agent and man, but much of the growth is you.
(beat)
Bring her with you, have her help you out. However, I need someone I can trust, and someone who is well liked and respected in the Agency—that is you.
LEE
Billy-
BILLY
It will only be for a few weeks.
(beat)
You may even find you like management, just as you may someday find you enjoy marriage. I’m still sorry I didn’t push you harder to take the job at State—it takes money to raise a family, you know.
LEE
(stunned)
What I’ve been told.
BILLY
So, will you do it?
LEE
Yeah, I’ll do it, but you OWE me.
BILLY
Great. That’s a load off my mind.
He holds out his hand, which Lee shakes.

EXT. AGENCY (FOLLOWING MONDAY) – DAY
STOCK PHOTO – GEORGETOWN ENTRANCE
Camera ZOOMS onto International Federal Film sign.
INT. AGENCY (MONDAY) – DAY
Lee is sitting behind Billy’s desk, looking quite uncomfortable; it’s obviously been a very tiring day for him on his first day in charge. His desk is overflowing with files and reports. Lee is talking on the phone, when Amanda enters. He motions to her that he will be off the phone in a moment.
LEE
Could you forward your findings to the Agency? Attention, Lee Stetson. Thank you.
He hangs up the phone, and appears deep in thought.
AMANDA
A penny for your thoughts.
Lee shakes his head.
LEE
Nope, too rich.
AMANDA
Okay, make you a deal. How about a kiss?
During this exchange, Amanda has walked over to him and wrapped her arms around his neck. They kiss deeply, but the door suddenly bursts open. Francine walks in, closes the door quickly, and rolls her eyes.
FRANCINE
Oh, pul-lease.
Lee and Amanda step back from each other. Amanda is slightly embarrassed to be caught yet again. Francine places a stack of file folders on Billy’s desk.
LEE
Thank God it’s you. If Fielder comes into this office one more time, I might have to shoot him.
FRANCINE
I’ll just let Fred know you are looking for him, then, shall I?
Francine laughs and exits.
AMANDA
(shakes her head)
Poor Fred.
(beat)
We really need to work on locking the door.
(another beat)
Are you ready for lunch? Do you want to go out or should I order in?
LEE
I’m swamped. I don’t think I’ll even have time to eat, so order something in—and I’ll eat when I can.
AMANDA
You will not, Lee Stetson. I will order us some lunch, you will eat, and then I will see what I can do to help you catch up.
LEE
All right, you win, you win.
(beat)
I just got off the phone with the CDC.
AMANDA
Great. What did they find?
LEE
Nothing.
AMANDA
Nothing?
LEE
They found no evidence of vaccine tampering. They tested several random vials and none contained this bird flu virus.
AMANDA
So what now?
LEE
I don’t know, Amanda. We reported our findings to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration. Not much else we can do, unless they ask for our help.
AMANDA
Do you think our contact was wrong?
Lee shakes his head.
LEE
I think you’re beginning to rub off on me. Every fiber in my being is telling me something isn’t right here. The CDC missed something—we missed something or Jensen-Clark is good at hiding the evidence.
(beat)
When the CDC sends me a copy of their report, we can go over it; perhaps you will see something they overlooked.
(another beat)
I also know the Justice Department has the Coopers in protective custody, but maybe we can relay a message to Stan, see if he knows something we don’t.
Amanda reaches for the telephone.
AMANDA
I’ll order us some lunch. It sounds like we have a long day ahead of us. Is there anything else I can do for you?
Lee sits back down at the desk.
LEE
Just one more thing. . .
He pulls her down onto his lap.
LEE
I love you.
AMANDA
I love you, too, Mr. Stetson.
She grins and he smiles back; we. . .
END OF ACT THREE
ACT FOUR
EXT. LEE’S APARTMENT – MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT
Late evening, Lee’s Corvette is parked on the street in front of the apartment building. The camera ZOOMS through the window of his apartment.
INT. LEE’S APARTMENT – MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT
Lee is asleep in his bed. Shadows cast on his image, as he has left the bathroom light on, and the door is open just a crack. He appears to be having a restless night and has kicked most of his covers off.
EXT. TRAIN PLATFORM (LEE’S DREAM) - EARLY MORNING
Lee is standing at the train station platform. He is wearing a waiter’s uniform. The scene is eerily familiar, except shrouded in mist. He didn't know why he was there, or how he even got there. Then he sees her. She looks like an angel, and is all dressed in white, even her housecoat. No words are said as he passes the package he suddenly has in his hands to her. She blows him a kiss and climbs aboard the train and then the train rolls down the track.
INT. AGENCY INTERNAL AFFAIRS (LEE’S DREAM) – DAY
Lee sees himself sitting in the Internal Affairs office with Billy, Francine and DIRK FREDERICKS. The SECRETARY opens the door and looks in.
SECRETARY
Excuse me. Uh, Mr. Stetson?
Lee turns around.
SECRETARY (continued)
I thought you'd want to know, they just located Special Agent Guthrie.
She leaves and closes the door. Lee smiles at the others.
LEE
The quarterback just recovered the ball.
INT. AGENCY MORGUE
A MORGUE WORKER covers Guthrie with a sheet and wheels him away. Lee, Billy, Francine, and Dirk look at each other. A DOCTOR stands near an examination table.
DIRK
That was your ball carrier?
LEE
They were after me, I handed off to him, he was supposed to go in for the TD.
(beat)
Why are we talking like this?
BILLY
(to the Doctor)
Did he have a package with him when you found him?
LEE
They probably got it when they shot him.
DOCTOR
He never mentioned a package to me, Scarecrow, but maybe she knows.
LEE
Who?
The Doctor points to another gurney. Lee hesitates before he lifts the sheet. He sees Amanda’s dead body.
LEE
Oh, my God, Amanda. . .
He takes her dead body and pulls her close to him, calling her name out repeatedly.
INT. LEE’S APARTMENT – MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT
Lee wakes with a start. He glances around his room and slowly gets his bearings back.
He reaches for the phone. In the process, he knocks over a book on his nightstand. Ignoring the fallen book, he quickly dials a number.
INT. AMANDA’S BEDROOM – NIGHT
The room is dark and Amanda is sound asleep in her bed. The phone RINGS. She knocks down a book on her nightstand reaching for the phone, hoping to answer before it wakes everyone else in the house.
AMANDA
(sleepy, groggily)
Hello.
LEE (V.O.)
(filtered)
Amanda, is that you?
AMANDA
Lee?
She lifts up her head and looks at the clock on the nightstand.

Thank God, you are alright.
Amanda sits up in bed, reaches over, and switches on the lamp.
INTERCUT BETWEEN LEE AND AMANDA
AMANDA
Lee, what’s wrong? Is there a security problem? Something wrong at the Agency?
LEE
No. Nothing. I just wanted to hear your voice.
(beat)
I’m sorry. I should let you sleep. You, um, need your rest. I’ll talk to you later.
AMANDA
I’m not buying it. Come on, Sweetheart. You are scaring me. Something is up, or you wouldn’t have called me at two-thirty in the morning.
LEE
(long pause)
I just wanted to tell you I love you.
AMANDA
I love you, too, but I know something is wrong. I can hear the tension in your voice.
LEE
Really, I just wanted to hear your voice and know you are okay.
AMANDA
You had another dream, didn’t you?
LEE
How did you know? I didn’t tell you.
AMANDA
I’m your wife. I know when something is troubling you and I can tell you haven’t been sleeping well.
Lee doesn’t immediately answer her.
AMANDA
I’ll be there in fifteen minutes.
LEE
You don’t need to do that. I’ll see you in the morning.
AMANDA
When the boys had nightmares, they would crawl into bed with me. Would you like me to hold you?
LEE
Yes. Forever.
Amanda smiles.
LEE (continued)
You stay; I’ll be there in a few minutes.
QUICK CUT
INT. AMANDA’S KITCHEN (NEXT MORNING) – DAY
Amanda enters the kitchen. Her mother is standing over the stove cooking breakfast.
AMANDA
Good morning, Mother.
DOTTY
Morning, Amanda. You slept in this morning.
Amanda grabs a piece of toast.
AMANDA
I don’t need to go into work until later.
DOTTY
What time did Lee leave this morning?
AMANDA
Huh?
DOTTY
Well, it was Lee who called at o’dark-thirty this morning, wasn’t it?
Amanda blushes.
DOTTY (continued)
I heard you get up not long after and open the front door.
AMANDA
Lee needed some TLC.
DOTTY
And did you give it to him?
AMANDA
Mother, it’s not what you think.
DOTTY
I don’t think you want to know what I think.
AMANDA
(changing the topic)
Did the boys get off to school okay?
DOTTY
Yes. And you are avoiding my questions.
(beat)
Oh well, would you like some eggs and bacon, and will Lee be joining us?
AMANDA
He’s already at work, but I would love some breakfast.
Dotty raises an eyebrow.
DOTTY
You didn’t go in with him?
AMANDA
No, we’re sort of working on separate projects right now.
(beat)
I’m working late tonight, so don’t wait up for me.
DOTTY
With Lee?
She places a plate in front of Amanda.
AMANDA
No, another co-worker.
DOTTY
In the editing room?
AMANDA
(quickly)
No, we’re going on location.
DOTTY
Will you be shooting?
AMANDA
(under her breath)
Gosh, I hope not.
DOTTY
What, Dear?
AMANDA
I said we’ll be on a lot.
(beat)
Don’t worry about the dishes, Mother. I got them this morning.
DOTTY
Thanks, Dear.
She kisses Amanda on the cheek.
DOTTY (continued)
I’m going to take a shower and get ready for the day.
She takes off toward the stairs.
AMANDA
After I finish the dishes, I’ll be leaving for work.
DOTTY (O.C.)
Good luck at your shooting.
ON AMANDA
Amanda cringes and we. . .

EXT. D.C. STREET – DAY
A couple cars and an Agency surveillance van are parked on the street.
ON CARS
Agents are sitting inside their cars waiting.
Francine and Amanda arrive a few moments later in her car.
ON FRANCINE CAR
She parks her car, gets out, and leans into the window of one of the cars and says something inaudible. The occupants in the car nod and take off down the road. She then heads toward the Agency van and slides open the door.
INT. AGENCY VAN
FRANCINE
It’s a go. Judge Mueller just signed the search warrant.
She closes the door and walks back to her car. The van and her car leave the scene.
EXT. OLD WAREHOUSE BUILDING – DAY
The cars pull in front of the warehouse and agents exit their vehicles. We see Francine, Amanda, Tony, and Charles flank both sides of the building.
ON FRANCINE AND AMANDA
AMANDA
(to Francine)
Be careful.
FRANCINE
You, too.
Francine nods her head and checks her weapon. She motions to Amanda to stay back. Amanda steps to the side against the wall, her gun drawn also.

She then holds up three fingers and the other agents nod in understanding. She counts down to zero and then mouths ‘go,’ and the agents quickly enter the building, guns drawn.

GUNFIRE erupts somewhere inside the warehouse and we. . .

INT. HOSPITAL OBSERVATION ROOM – DAY
Amanda is sitting on a bed inside a hospital emergency room. Francine is standing at the edge of the bed talking to her.
FRANCINE
Are you okay?
AMANDA
Francine, I’m fine, except I have a nasty headache.
FRANCINE
What do you remember?
AMANDA
Sorry, I don’t remember anything.
Lee pulls back the room curtain.
LEE
Oh, my God, you have amnesia again.
AMANDA
Who are you?
She notices Lee’s worried expression.
AMANDA (continued)
I’m just kidding, Lee. I was trying to lighten the mood.
LEE
That’s not funny, Amanda. I was so worried about you.
He rushes over to her and pulls her into his arms.
FRANCINE
I guess that’s my cue to get out of here.
Francine exits.
LEE
Are you all right?
AMANDA
A little sore.
She touches the back of her head and winces. Lee runs his hand over her head.
LEE
You have a good sized goose egg there.
He then gently caresses her cheek and softly kisses her lips.
LEE
Oh, Amanda, I feared the worst when I heard about the shooting. I don’t know what I would have done if I had lost you.
AMANDA
Shush. I’m okay, Lee. I’m right here.
(beat)
How are Charles and Tony?
LEE
Charles is in surgery. He’s lost a lot of blood and is in critical condition.
(beat; trying to rein in his emotions)
Tony died on the way to the hospital.
AMANDA
Oh, my gosh.
He walks away from Amanda and punches a wall with his fist.
LEE
Damn it!
Amanda gets up off the bed and walks behind Lee, putting her arms around him.
AMANDA
Lee, this isn’t your fault.
LEE
Like hell it isn’t! I sent one agent to his death, and the other might die. And you Amanda, it easily could have been you who had been killed in that warehouse.
AMANDA
But it wasn’t.
His face strained, he turns around and takes Amanda into his arms, buries his face in her neck, and we. . . FREEZE FRAME

EXT. OLD WAREHOUSE BUILDING – DAY
The scene opens with several cars pulling up in front of an old warehouse in a less than desirable part of Washington, D.C. Several agents exit out of the cars. One is carrying a door ram. Francine and Amanda are standing next to one entrance, while Tony and Charles are standing near another entrance.

CLOSE on door; we. . .

ACT TWO
CUT TO
INSERT CLOCK - READS 2:30

LEE (V.O.)
(filtered)
ON AMANDA
Amanda cringes and we. . .
CUT TO
EXT.
WIDEN SHOT
She then holds up three fingers and the other agents nod in understanding. She counts down to zero and then mouths ‘go,’ and the agents quickly enter the building, guns drawn.
FRANCINE (O.C.)
Freeze, Federal Agents.
GUNFIRE erupts somewhere inside the warehouse and we. . .
BLACK OUT
