PROLOGUE
EXT. OFFICE TOWER – ESTABLISHING – DAY
A glass and chrome structure in the city.
ZOOM INTO office window.
INT. EXECUTIVE OFFICE – DAY
WIDEN to reveal a man (who we later learn is SVEN ZORAN) standing with his back turned looking out a window from his office. In front of him is a large conference table with a map under a sheet of glass. The audience cannot see what is on the map. He is talking on a speakerphone.
SVEN
You’re certain this weekend is the best time to strike?
FEMALE VOICE
Absolutely. This is the time when they are the most vulnerable. Your orders are to go ahead as soon as preparations are complete.
SVEN
I don’t take orders from you. I have my own agenda; however, several generations have been filled with nothing but deception and lies and it is time to act.
FEMALE VOICE
Most excellent.
SVEN
Others will watch as ‘she’ falls. . .
He hangs the phone back on the hook and then slams his fist against the table shattering the glass and under the glass fragments we see the map of Yugoslavia.
CAMERA PULLS IN TIGHT ON the map; we. . .
ACT ONE
EXT. AGENCY GEORGETOWN ENTRANCE SIGN – DAY
INT. AGENCY CORRIDOR – NEAR ELEVATORS – DAY
THE CAMERA TRACKS ON LEE AND AMANDA coming out of the elevator door. Lee pushes the coats aside and then, placing his hand on Amanda’s back, he leads her toward the bullpen.
AMANDA
Did Billy say what he wanted?
LEE
No, he just said he needed to see you, and to meet him in the bullpen; and, for me to come because he knew I would tag along.
AMANDA
(smiles)
He knows you too well.
(beat)
I wonder what he wants. I still have not been cleared for field duty.
LEE
(shrugs)
I guess we’ll find out.
Lee and Amanda enter the bullpen.
INT. AGENCY BULLPEN
There is a large banner across the room reading ‘Congratulations.”
AGENTS in the bullpen look up when they see Lee and Amanda enter and yell, “Surprise.”
Lee and Amanda frantically exchange worried glances. ‘Does the Agency know?’
FRANCINE comes around the corner with a large cake. And Francine and the other Agents clap their hands.
CLOSE UP ON CAKE
The cake reads ‘Well Done Amanda.”
AMANDA
(finding her voice)
What’s this?
BILLY COMES INTO FRAME
He’s holding a certificate. He holds up his hand gesturing for the crowd to be quiet.
BILLY
Listen up people. I would like to present Amanda this certificate of completion. It reads, “Amanda West King having graduated from freshman candidacy classes and being found to be of good character and faithful to uphold and sustain the law is hereby now a full-fledged agent for the government of United States of America—signed the Secretary of Defense.”
He hands her the certificate and new ID badge.
AMANDA
Oh, my gosh.
She turns to look at Lee. He couldn’t be prouder of his wife and partner.
Agents in the room ad-lib and we hear some yelling “Speech, speech.”
AMANDA
I don’t know what to say.
FRANCINE
Well, there’s a first time for everything.
Amanda looks around the room and gives a lingering look to Lee and then to Billy.
AMANDA
All I can say is thanks for believing in me.
There is more clapping and cheering and fellow Agents offering ‘congratulations’ to Amanda. Francine cuts the cake and people mill around the room for a few moments.
Amanda, carrying two pieces of cake, walks over to Lee who is now standing near the coffee station and hands him a plate.
INT. AGENCY – COFFEE STATION
She takes a bite of cake and then places the plate down on the counter and fingers the new ID badge.
ON BADGE
We see it is similar to Lee’s, except for her picture is on the background.
BACK TO SCENE
LEE
I knew you could do it, Partner.
AMANDA
I can’t believe it. It seems surreal. There’s a blue strip. Blue is for Field Section. . . I belong in Field Section. And my name ‘Amanda King.’
(beat; sighs)
I just wish. . .
LEE
What?
AMANDA
I just wish it read Stetson instead.
Lee places his plate down on the counter, then puts his hands on her shoulders and nods in understanding.
BILLY (O.C,)
(yelling)
Stetson. King. My office, now.
LEE
Duty calls.
Placing his hand in the familiar place on her back he leads her toward Billy’s office.
INT. AGENCY – BILLY’S OFFICE
Lee and Amanda take their customary places in the chairs in front of Billy’s desk. Billy perches himself on the edge of his desk and he picks up a file.
BILLY
Five years ago, when Lee first brought you to my office, I knew then there was something special about you Amanda and I feel like a proud papa seeing his little girl all grown up. You have made a great addition to the Agency and to Field Section, although you have not been able to join Lee in the field since your recovery from a gunshot wound. . .
Lee reaches over to take Amanda’s hand and she squeezes it.
BILLY (continued)
I have reports here from your personal physician, Dr. Goodman, Dr. Kelford, and Dr. Pfaff, and all three have cleared you for active field duty. Welcome back.
AMANDA
Oh, my gosh. Really?
Billy nods his head. Amanda quickly stands up and gives Billy a hug.
AMANDA (continued)
I’m sorry. Is that allowed?
BILLY
Today it is.
LEE
Congratulations, Partner. It will be good to be working in the field with you again.
BILLY
This brings me to the reason I called you in. I have an assignment for you two.
Francine breezes into the room carrying several file folders, which she places down on Billy’s desk.
BILLY (continued)
You can stay Francine. This assignment involves you too.
Lee stands up offering his chair to Francine, which she accepts. He then stands behind Amanda. Billy picks up a piece of paper from his desk and silently reads it to himself before he turns his attention back to his agents.
BILLY (continued)
As I am sure you three know, tensions in Yugoslavia are very high and the region is on the brink of war. International relations with Yugoslavia are important to U.S. as it acts as a buffer between the west and east. There are certain public and private groups who want to see the country stay unified. One such group is the League of Brotherhood and Unity, and they are holding an annual conference here in the D.C. area. Sven Zoran is the community organizer and has invited several keynote speakers from around the world including France, Britain, and a representative from the World Bank. Also in attendance will be dignitaries from Yugoslavia, including from the Republic of Serbia, Jakov Ribar, and the Republic of Croatia, Mika Markovic.
He hands his three agents dossiers on these men.
BILLY (continued)
We have received an anonymous tip that one of these men will be assassinated at this conference, but we don’t know who, nor do we know the motive. They have been warned and although bringing their own security detail, they have not agreed to Agency help. However, it would look bad on the U.S. if one of them were to be killed here on American soil. Therefore, you three will be there and your job is to keep your eyes and ears open while in attendance.
(beat)
Lee and Amanda, you will be posing as Mr. and Mrs. Steadman, and I suggest using the IFF cover of director and his assistant looking for a documentary angle.
Amanda turns around to look at Lee who can barely contain his excitement. He places his hand on her shoulder and she reaches up to squeeze his hand.
FRANCINE
That's convenient.
AMANDA
Francine, please. Lee and I are professionals.
FRANCINE
Right. Professional what?
(beat)
Where is this conference being held?
BILLY
At the Majestic.
FRANCINE
(excited)
Ohhh, the Majestic? You mean I finally have an assignment where I can hob-knob with the rich and famous.
(beat)
Soaking tubs and fireplaces in all the rooms, private tennis lessons, 18 holes of golf, world-class dining, massages, facials, manicures and pedicures. Count me in.
(another beat)
Now, Billy, I’ll need a wardrobe allowance. I promise not to go too over budget, but I have the perfect evening gown all picked out. . .
ON BILLY
FRANCINE
Why are you giving me that look, Billy? What are you not telling me?
BILLY
(smiles)
Nothing, Francine. Don’t worry about your wardrobe—it’s all been taken care of. . .
EXT. MAJESTIC HOTEL – FRONT ENTRANCE – ESTABLISHING – DAY
Camera pulls back to reveal an elegant hotel and the front entrance to the hotel. Cars are arriving and leaving and bellhops are opening doors for guests and taking luggage.
INT. MAJESTIC HOTEL – HALLWAY – DAY
Francine standing outside a guest room pushing a room service cart. She is dressed in a white banded collar shirt, waist apron, and black polyester-cotton pants.
She knocks on the door.
FRANCINE
Room service.
She opens the door and pushes the cart inside the room.
ON CLOSED DOOR – room number 205
FRANCINE
(filter)
Sir, please. . . put some pants on.
(beat)
Billy is going to owe me big time for this. . .
INT. MAJESTIC HOTEL – HALLWAY OUTSIDE ROOM NUMBER 312
A BELLHOP opens the door and allows Lee and Amanda to enter first, before he comes through the door carrying their luggage.
BELLHOP
Where would you like your luggage, Mr. Steadman?
LEE
In front of the bed for now.
The bellhop puts down the luggage and then opens the outer drapes to the French doors that lead to the balcony. Sunlight filters into the room. It is a beautiful hotel room, simple but eloquent, tastefully decorated and furnished with four-poster king size bed, dresser with a television on top, two nightstands with lamps, a gas fireplace in the corner, round table and two chairs, sofa and French doors leading to a balcony. Lee and Amanda play their covers.
AMANDA
Wow! This room is like a fairytale. And look Lee, we have a gorgeous view.
LEE
Yes, Dear. It’s nice. Very nice.
Lee puts his arm around her waist and they both check out the room.
BELLHOP
Will there be anything else?
LEE
That will be all for now.
(reading the name tag)
Thank you, Scott.
Lee turns to the bellhop and pulls out his wallet, handing him a couple bills.
BELLHOP
Thank you, Sir. Enjoy your stay.
As Lee puts the wallet back into his pocket, the bellhop turns to leave the room. Lee then places his suitcase on the bed and takes out a device to sweep the room.
AMANDA
Lee, this room is amazing. The down comforter on the bed looks soft and comfortable, and did you see the large soaking tub in the bathroom?
Lee walks around the room holding the machine out in front of him, but winks at her. He stops and shuts down the device and places it back into his suitcase.
LEE
The room is clean.
AMANDA
Good.
(beat)
So now what? Ribar and Markovic aren’t expected to arrive until this later this evening.
LEE
Whatever could we do with our time?
He starts to walk toward her and she steps back.
AMANDA
(smiles)
Well, we could play a couple sets of tennis before dinner.
LEE
That we could.
He takes off his suit jacket, and places it over the chair inside the room and then toes out of his shoes.
AMANDA
Or how about nine holes of golf?
Amanda kicks off her pumps and removes her blazer.
LEE
I was thinking more along the lines of an indoor activity.
He slowly unbuttons his shirt.
AMANDA
Really?
She is now against the bed and can’t back up any further. He wraps his arms around her pulling her close to him.
LEE
Mm-hmm.
AMANDA
Well, I think I might have a deck of cards in my purse. You could play a game of Solitaire.
Lee shakes his head.
LEE
Nope, the game I’m thinking of requires two players.
He kisses her passionately before they lay down on the bed together. . .
QUICK DISSOLVE
INT. LEE AND AMANDA’S HOTEL ROOM
We see Amanda dressed in a silk nightgown resting her head on Lee’s bare chest. Lee begins to stir and opens his eyes.
AMANDA
Hello, Sleepyhead.
LEE
Hello to you.
AMANDA
Have a good nap?
Lee yawns and stretches.
LEE
Mm-hm.
(beat)
What time is it?
Amanda looks at the clock on nightstand.
ON CLOCK, the clock reads 4:45.
BACK TO SCENE
AMANDA
Fifteen minutes to five.
LEE
We should probably get ready for dinner.
He pushes the covers back and swings his long legs over the bed.
Soon there is a loud knock on the door.
FRANCINE (O.C.)
Lee, Amanda, open up. I know you are in there.
Lee turns to look at Amanda and panics.
LEE
Quick, into the bathroom.
Amanda quickly picks up her clothes, rushes into the bathroom.
Lee pulls on a pair of pants and after he walks to the door, he opens it for Francine. She comes into the room.
FRANCINE
Isn’t this cozy?
LEE
Can it, Francine.
FRANCINE
What took you so long? Why aren’t you dressed?
(beat)
And where’s Amanda?
LEE
She’s in the shower. We’re trying to get ready for dinner.
We hear the WATER turn on.
LEE (continued)
What are you doing here? Are you trying to intentionally blow our covers?
He tries to shove Francine out the door.
FRANCINE
I thought you two said you broke up.
LEE
(sheepishly)
We did.
FRANCINE
Then why do you have that look?
LEE
What look? I don’t have any look.
FRANCINE
The look.
(beat)
You know—the “I just got lucky” look.
LEE
Francine, please. She’s my best friend. . . and she’s my partner.
FRANCINE.
Uh-huh.
(beat)
You know you were a better liar before you stated playing 'backgammon' with her.
LEE
Don't you have something you’re supposed to be doing?
FRANCINE
I'm doing it.
(beat)
It’s called interrogation. And I've already discerned what I need to know.
LEE
Discerned what?
FRANCINE
You tell me.
LEE
(losing his temper)
I have had it up to here with your so-called interrogation. You will stop it now, before I call Billy and have him take you off this case. While we are here on this mission, Amanda’s and my personal life is off limits.
(beat)
Do I make myself clear?
FRANCINE
Crystal.
LEE
Good.
(beat)
Now, was there something you needed to tell me?
FRANCINE
Yes, Billy got word to me that Ribar and Markovic’s planes have touched down at Dulles, and they are now in their limos and on their way to the hotel. Anticipated time of arrival is 1800 hours. Also, the list of guests at the hotel cleared already.
LEE
Thank you.
(beat)
How about we rendezvous back here at our room at 2100 hours?
Francine is back in Agent-mode. She checks her watch.
FRANCINE
2100 hours, Lee.
Francine exits and Lee stands in front of the door to the bathroom.
LEE
I guess you heard everything.
AMANDA (O.C.)
Do you think she knows?
LEE
(shrugs)
She knows we’re back together.
AMANDA (O.C.)
I guess I can expect another lecture about your ‘scorched earth’ policy from her.
(beat; sighs)
I wish she knew our real relationship and she didn’t think we’re just sleeping together.
(another beat)
I’m tired of the lying and sneaking around.
LEE
I know you are, and so am I.
(beat)
I swear to you, Amanda, the secrets, lies, and half-truths will end. Someday we’ll come clean about our jobs and our marriage. I want everyone to know that you are mine.
AMANDA (O.C.)
And you're mine.
Amanda opens the door and peaks around the corner of the threshold.
AMANDA (continued)
Hey, Big Fella. Care to join me in the shower?
LEE
I thought you’d never ask.
Lee enters through the bathroom door and closes it. . .
CLOSE UP ON DOOR
CUT TO
INT. HOTEL – DRAGONFLY RESTAURANT AND LOUNGE – NIGHT
Lee and Amanda enter through the archway into the restaurant. He leads them to a quiet table for two near the entrance. They sit facing each other. Lee glances around the room and Amanda takes his hand in hers. Every table has candle centerpieces in the middle and white tablecloths draped over them. The candles are lit. Waiters walk back and forth with their arms full of trays.
A WAITER approaches the table, hands each of them a menu, and places a basket of sour dough rolls on the table.
WAITER
Welcome to the Dragonfly Restaurant and Lounge. My name is Jake and I will be your server. Our special this evening is Pesto crusted rack of lamb with a Merlot sauce, almond dried cherry couscous and eggplant caponata. While you decide, could I interest you in a cocktail or start you off with an appetizer?
LEE
I think we’ll both have a glass of chardonnay. Okay, Honey?
Amanda nods her head.
LEE (continued)
And for starters, how about some shrimp cocktail.
WAITER
Very good, Sir. I’ll be right back with your wine.
The waiter leaves, and Lee and Amanda continue to keep watch on the front desk, which can be seen from where they are sitting.
AMANDA
Sweetheart?
LEE
Hmm?
Amanda lowers her voice, but keeps smiling sweetly. Lee does the same. She checks her watch.
AMANDA
Francine said 6’o clock. It’s after 6:00. Do you think something happened to them?
LEE
(shrugs)
No, they probably got stuck in rush hour traffic. I think we would have heard by now if something bad had happened. The Agency has watchdogs tailing them.
The waiter returns with the wine and waits for Lee to sample. Lee takes a sip.
LEE
Perfect.
WAITER
Are you ready to order?
LEE
I’m not quite ready. Are you, Dear?
AMANDA
Could you give us a few more minutes?
WAITER
Of course.
He exits.
Amanda takes a sip of wine.
ANGLE with the Front Desk in the background.
We see a party of guests arrive at the Front Desk. There is a man, a woman, and two burly men in dark suits. This is JAKOV RIBAR and his wife, JULIA, and his two BODYGUARDS.
ON LEE AND AMANDA
LEE
There’s Ribar. Who’s the woman with him?
Amanda shrugs her shoulders.
AMANDA
Wife? Mistress?
Lee raises an eyebrow at her.
AMANDA
What?
ANOTHER ANGLE
The desk clerk hands over a room key to the couple. Another party arrives at the front desk. We see MIKA MARKOVIC and his wife, MONICA, and his two BODYGUARDS.
BACK ON LEE AND AMANDA
LEE
And there’s Markovic. Looks like he’s not traveling alone either.
(beat)
We’re going to have to find out who their traveling companions are. And verify neither are a risk. Also, we need to find out what room number they are in.
(another beat)
I think we’ll go with the old standard.
Amanda nods knowingly.
AMANDA
Right.
LEE
Okay, here we go.
They smile adoringly at each other. Lee slowly lets go of her hand, stands up, and walks out of the restaurant.
Lee walks over to the Front Desk. He is wearing a big smile while he speaks to the DESK CLERK. He pats his pants and jacket pockets.
LEE
I'm sorry. This is very embarrassing, but it seems that both the wife and I left our keys in our room. I was wondering if you could. . .
DESK CLERK
That's no problem, Sir. Mr. Steadman, correct?
Suddenly Lee sneezes and then clutches his chest and gasps as if he can’t get enough air. He appears to be struggling to breathe, and he begins to wheeze. The clerk looks up.
DESK CLERK
Mr. Steadman, are you all right, Sir? Is there anything I can do?
Lee points to Amanda.
LEE
My wife. . . over there. . . my wife. . .
DESK CLERK
Don't worry. I'll get her.
The desk clerk rushes out of sight to Amanda's table, where she’s digging through her purse.
DESK CLERK
Your husband--
AMANDA
Yes, I know.
She stands up.
Meanwhile, Lee turns the computer screen toward him and punches in a few keys.
LEE
Bingo.
He quickly turns the screen around and goes back to his act.
Amanda rushes to his side with the desk clerk following. She puts her purse on the desk and reaches for an inhaler.
AMANDA
Here you are.
Lee takes the inhaler from her and pretends to spray the medicine into his mouth. Meanwhile, the clerk holds up the phone receiver.
DESK CLERK
Should I call an ambulance for you?
AMANDA
No, thanks for your concern.
(beat)
I think he’s doing much better. This was a mild attack.
She puts her arms around him.
AMANDA (continued)
That’s right, Sweetheart. Breathe in and breathe out. You’re doing great.
Lee gradually calms down and breathes normally. He smiles, relieved.
AMANDA (continued)
Are you all right?
LEE
Yes. I think I got too close to those flowers.
Lee points to a large vase of flowers sitting on the front desk counter. The clerk takes the flowers and places them on the counter behind him.
AMANDA
Are you ready to go? Would you like to sit back down in the restaurant? Maybe get a glass of water.
Lee nods his head. Amanda looks over at the worried clerk.
AMANDA (continued)
Thank you for all your help.
DESK CLERK
Of course. And your room key.
He slides the room key toward them, which Amanda takes.
Lee puts his arm around Amanda and they walk back toward the restaurant. She smiles at him and he leans over to kiss her on the cheek, before he pulls out her chair for her. He sits down opposite her and raises his wine glass.
LEE
To old standards.
They click glasses, and then they each take a sip. Lee winks at her and Amanda smiles; we. . .
END OF ACT ONE
ACT TWO
EXT. MAJESTIC HOTEL – FRONT ENTRANCE –DAY
EXT. MAJESTIC HOTEL – OUTDOOR POOL – DAY
The sun is shining brightly. We see Lee Stetson slowly walk up the stairs of the hotel pool. He is wearing swim trunks and water drips off his body. He grabs a towel, begins to dry his hair, and then shakes it out while he walks toward the hot tub and sits on the edge.
Amanda is laying down in a chaise lounger, pretending to be reading a book, when she is actually checking out Lee. She smiles behind the book. She is wearing a one-piece bathing suit and a sarong wrapped around her waist. Francine comes up behind her and places a coaster and a glass of ice tea on a low resin table. She is wearing a green polo shirt, black pleated skirt, and heels.
FRANCINE
Here you go, Mrs. Steadman, one ice tea.
She then places a pen and a guest check on the table.
FRANCINE
Sign here, please.
Amanda reaches across to sign the guest check when Francine catches the light off Amanda’s engagement ring. She grabs Amanda’s hand and closely inspects the ring.
FRANCINE
Oh, Amanda. What a beautiful ring. That’s a certified Princess-Cut Diamond Solitaire Engagement Ring. At least 1.05 carats, if I am not mistaken.
(beat)
That is NOT standard Agency issue.
AMANDA
(nervous chuckle)
I don’t know what you are talking about, Francine. This is the ring Coverts and Covers gave us.
FRANCINE
Right? And I shop at K-mart.
Lee has now joined the two women and sees the total panic on his wife’s face. He has a towel wrapped around his lower body.
LEE
What’s going on?
FRANCINE
I was just admiring the beautiful engagement ring Amanda is wearing.
(beat; to Lee)
Someone knows their 4 C's.
At Lee's questioning glance.
FRANCINE (continued)
. . . cut, color, clarity and carat.
Lee does not take the bait.
LEE
(shrugs)
I guess. Don’t pay much attention. A ring’s a ring.
FRANCINE
I was just telling Amanda that ring is not your typical Agency ‘grouping.’
LEE
How would you know—when was the last time you played the cover of man and wife?
FRANCINE
Umm.
LEE
If you like, I could request to Billy that the next time the Agency needs to use the cover of a married couple, you volunteered to do it with Beaman.
FRANCINE
You wouldn’t dare.
From the corner of her eye, Francine sees the hotel manager, MR. BARTLETT, looking her way.
FRANCINE
Here comes the hotel manager.
(beat; pointing her fingers at both of them)
This conversation is far from over.
MR. BARTLETT
(to Lee and Amanda)
Is everything okay?
LEE
Everything is great. I was just telling. . .
(pretending to read her nametag)
Francine, how much we have enjoyed our stay at your wonderful hotel. The service has been outstanding.
MR. BARTLETT
Thank you. . . Mr.—?
LEE
Steadman.
MR. BARTLETT
Mr. Steadman.
(beat)
Could we get you anything poolside?
LEE
I see my wife has an ice tea, but I think a nice cold glass of lemonade with flesh slices of lemon sounds good right about now.
MR. BARTLETT
I will have one of my staff bring that out to you, but I need Ms. Redmond to take a lunch order to Cabin 3.
(to Francine)
The guest asked for you specifically. The order is ready for you in the kitchen.
FRANCINE
(less then thrilled)
Great.
She turns and starts to leave.
MR. BARTLETT
I hope you continue to enjoy your stay with us, Mr. and Mrs. Steadman. Good afternoon.
Lee and Amanda in union say “Good afternoon.”
CAMERA RESUMES ON FRANCINE who is walking down the patio, headed toward the kitchen. She turns to look toward Lee and Amanda. In the background, Lee has now sat down in a chaise lounger next to Amanda, and has picked up her hand and brings it to his lips to kiss.
FRANCINE
Something more than meets the eye is going on with those two. And I’m going to find out what it is.
(beat)
And if room service delivery is the same guy from yesterday. . . he had better have his pants on today or he’ll be singing soprano for a week. . .
INT. LEE AND AMANDA’S HOTEL ROOM – NIGHT
Lee and Amanda enter through the door. Lee takes off his tie and suit jacket. Amanda paces the room.
LEE
Well, that was pretty much a waste of an afternoon, although I have to admit the conference was interesting. Jakov Ribar gave a compelling speech. I almost took out my checkbook.
Lee laughs.
AMANDA
How could we have been so careless?
LEE
(shrugs)
Maybe the intel is bad.
AMANDA
What are we going to do?
LEE
Stay here until the conference is over. So it’s been quiet. All we were supposed to do was keep our eyes and ears open, and we’ve done that.
(beat)
Maybe Francine has heard something.
AMANDA
She knows. She knows.
LEE
What?
AMANDA
Francine. She knows.
Lee sits on the edge of the bed and grabs Amanda pulling her to his lap.
LEE
Sweetheart, she doesn’t know anything.
AMANDA
But we were careless. We wore OUR rings.
LEE
Yes, cause I for once wanted to wear our rings. They spend too much time in my nightstand as it is. So what she noticed your engagement ring, but at least she did not notice the matching wedding bands.
AMANDA
Some spies we are. We can’t even keep a secret.
LEE
(sighs heavily)
Not when it comes to the feelings I have for you.
Amanda rests her chin against his cheek.
AMANDA
The feeling’s mutual.
LEE
Now, can we get our heads back onto the game?
AMANDA
You’re right. I’m not being very professional, am I?
(beat)
What would you like to know?
LEE
Did you learn anything this afternoon?
AMANDA
The people I talked to appear to be sincere. They all seem to have the same goals of keeping a unified Yugoslavia.
(beat)
The lecture was very informative. I did not know Yugoslavia was the first communist country to open its borders to all foreign visitors. And that Stalin considered Tito a traitor.
(another beat)
I was also not aware Josip Broz Tito said he was a ‘leader of one country which has two alphabets, three languages, four religions, five nationalities, six republics, surrounded by seven neighbors, a country in which live eight ethnic minorities.’ No wonder things are such a mess there. Do you think the republics will stay together? It’s sad to think nothing stays the same anymore.
LEE
The world is ever changing and honesty I don’t know. There’s a lot of tension between the republics.
AMANDA
Maybe debt relief is what they need.
Lee shrugs.
LEE
Well, our history lesson still does not lead us any closer to knowing who the intended victim is, nor the motivation behind the assassination or even if there is going to be an attempt. And we are not any closer to knowing who is engineering the whole thing.
(beat)
However, we still have a dinner and dance this evening and another lecture tomorrow morning. If anything we can chalk this mission up to an Agency vacation. . . maybe, we should call it Operation Romantic Getaway.
Amanda wraps her arms tightly around his neck and plays with his hair.
AMANDA
Funny that was close to what my mother called our weekend.
LEE
Really?
(beat)
What did you tell her we were doing?
AMANDA
I told her IFF was filming a documentary on hotels and that in order to make it authentic, we were staying in one.
Lee laughs.
LEE
She bought it?
AMANDA
No. She told me to have fun, and to not do anything she wouldn’t do. . . and tell Lee hello from me. In addition, I found a box from Rebecca Fantasies in my suitcase.
LEE
So I guess I can expect the ‘when are you going to make my daughter an honest woman’ question soon.
(beat; laughs)
Your mother is something else.
AMANDA
She loves you.
Lee has a dreamy look on his face.
LEE
It’s been a long time since I have been part of a family.
(beat)
I love her, and our boys. . . and their mother.
AMANDA
You do?
LEE
Yes, very, very much. And right now, I would like to show her how much.
He leans in to kiss her and then slides her off his lap, gently lays her down on the bed, and lies down next to her. He kisses her passionately. Then there is a sudden KNOCK on the door. Lee groans and gets up and walks toward the door. Amanda quickly makes herself presentable. Lee squares his shoulders before reaching for the handle; we hear a second louder knock.
FRANCINE (O.C.)
Room service.
Lee opens the door and Francine enters the room pushing a cart through the door at the same time.
FRANCINE (continued)
I didn’t interrupt anything, did I?
AMANDA
Hello, Francine.
FRANCINE
Hello to you, Amanda.
(beat)
You look a little flushed. Are you feeling all right?
LEE
Was there something you needed, Francine?
FRANCINE
No, not really. Feel like this weekend has been a complete bust. Have you heard or seen anything?
LEE
Amanda and I were just talking about that.
(beat)
No. But there’s still another day of the conference.
(another beat)
Any activity going on in the dignitaries' rooms?
FRANCINE
Nothing that wouldn’t be going on in this room.
AMANDA
Francine!
FRANCINE
Sorry. . . just a little joke.
Lee scowls.
FRANCINE (continued)
Markovic and his wife are in room 402. His personal bodyguards stand outside his room when he is there or they are with him at all times when he is anywhere in the hotel. The same can be said of Ribar, except he and his wife are right down this hall in room 301.
AMANDA
Yes, I’ve noticed the bodyguards standing outside his room.
LEE
What about the layout of the hotel? What can you tell us, Francine?
FRANCINE
There are 120 rooms, five floors, no guest rooms on the bottom floor, 15 two-bedroom guest cottages. There’s the lobby, front desk, concierge desk, three or four meeting rooms depending on the configuration, a grand ballroom, the main restaurant and lounge, a piano bar, spa, swimming pool, golf course, two tennis courts, and the resort grounds.
(beat)
This hotel would be a security team’s nightmare. Lots of hidden corners and plenty of potential places for an ambush.
AMANDA
Nothing like keeping us on our toes.
FRANCINE
Well, I had better get back to my duties.
Lee opens the door for her and she pushes the cart out.
FRANCINE (continued)
Thank you, Mr. and Mrs. Steadman. Enjoy your drinks and call room service if there is anything else I can get for you.
Lee nods his head and then closes the door. . .
INT. HOTEL – SVEN ZORAN’S ROOM – NIGHT
He is lying in bed and sits up when he hears a PHONE ring.
He reaches across the bed and picks up the phone.
SVEN
Zoran. . . yes, Dear. Everything is quiet for now. . . no, we want it to be quiet. Lull them into a false sense of security. . . yes, I am aware the Feds have their people watching the convention. . . no, you are not supposed to notice them. They are supposed to blend into the background. . . don’t worry; everything is going according to plan.
He hangs up the phone and smiles. . .
INT. HOTEL LOBBY – NIGHT
CAMERA ZOOMS OUT and we see a bank of telephones along the wall in the hotel lobby. Francine is talking on one of the phones.
FRANCINE
Hello, Jane. Francine Desmond. . . remember the little favor you owe me? I’m calling to collect. . . I need you to do a background check. . . yes, just a simple background check and we’ll call it even. . . Amanda King. . . yes, and could you make sure a courier delivers it to the front desk of the Majestic Hotel. . . Thanks, Jane.
She hangs up the phone and smiles; we. . .
END OF ACT TWO
ACT THREE
INT. MAJESTIC BALLROOM – NIGHT
ANGLE – FOYER ENTRANCE
Into the room steps Lee in black tie, he is linked arm and arm with Amanda, who appears lovely in chic evening gown. Lee and Amanda walk over to an open bar.
BARTENDER
What can I get you?
LEE
Two Cokes.
BARTENDER
Coming right up.
Amanda looks at Lee.
LEE
What? We are technically on duty.
The bartender fills two glasses from a dispenser. He then places two napkins down in front of them and sets the drinks on top. While this is going on Lee and Amanda scan the room.
Couples are dancing on the dance floor. Tables and chairs are lined up around the room. A live band plays in the corner.
They take their drinks, sit down at one of the tables, and sip their sodas.
LEE
Would you care to dance?
AMANDA
Love to.
Lee stands up and pulls out Amanda’s chair for her. Then, wrapping his arm around her waist firmly, he leads them toward the dance floor. Lee holds Amanda protectively close and she leans her head against his shoulder.
Amanda sighs.
LEE
Why did you sigh?
AMANDA
Did I?
Lee nods.
AMANDA (continued)
I was thinking how much I don’t want this weekend to end.
(beat)
I just. . . I just want this moment to last forever. Is that selfish of me?
Lee shakes his head.
LEE
Sweetheart, I know exactly what you mean. I have enjoyed this time together, too. I liked lying in bed with you all-night and waking up with you in my arms. We don’t get to do that enough to satisfy me.
(beat)
And, even though we are ‘playing’ husband and wife, I like that in public I can be affectionate and not care who is watching.
He dips his head to touch her lips with his and they kiss briefly. He then pulls her even closer and they continue to dance.
Glancing around the room, Lee notices Julia Ribar sitting alone at a table.
LEE
Isn’t that Jakov Ribar’s wife?
Amanda looks over her shoulder.
AMANDA
Yes.
LEE
Would you care if you sat this next one out, Dear?
AMANDA
Not at all. I think the old ‘hook slide’ injury is acting up.
Lee leads Amanda back to the table and kisses her cheek.
LEE
(whispers)
Love you.
Lee then crosses over to where Julia is sitting.
LEE
I couldn’t help but notice you are sitting here all alone. Would you care for some company?
JULIA
That would be lovely, Mister. . .
LEE
Steadman, but please call me Lee.
JULIA
Okay. Lee. And you may call me Julia.
LEE
(nodding)
Julia.
(beat)
Did your husband not join you?
JULIA
He left to take care of some business.
(bored)
He told me to mingle.
LEE
Well, would you care to dance?
JULIA
What about your wife?
(beat)
I noticed you dancing with your wife earlier. Least I assume she is your wife.
LEE
Yes, she is my wife.
JULIA
You make a lovely couple. She will not be jealous?
Lee shakes his head and holds out his hand, which Julia takes.
LEE
No, she knows I like to dance, but she has to sit out a few dances to rest her ankle. She injured herself teaching our two sons little league baseball.
Lee leads Julia to the dance floor. He takes her in his arms at a respectable distance.
JULIA
You have two boys?
LEE
Yes. Phillip is almost 15 and Jamie is 12.
JULIA
Are they here this weekend?
LEE
No, their grandmother is watching them.
(beat)
Do you have any children?
JULIA
No, Jakov did not want any.
(beat; sighs)
The world is an uncertain place.
(another beat)
Although, I must admit you have a beautiful country and our reception has been very hospitable.
LEE
Is this your first time visiting the United States?
JULIA
Yes and I hope to visit again.
(beat)
Tell me. . . Lee, what do you do for a living?
LEE
I am a director. I direct documentary films for a company called International Federal Films.
Julia puts her arms down and begins to walk away.
LEE
I’m sorry; did I say something to offend you?
JULIA
I’m not allowed to talk to the press.
LEE
I’m not the press. I do not work for the newspapers, magazines, or the television news. IFF makes documentary films for the government. I’m actually interested in learning more about your country and the people.
JULIA
What would you like to know?
LEE
How about we finish this dance while I ask one or two innocent little questions?
She shrugs and he takes her into his arms. She is a little more rigid this time.
LEE
Do you think this conference will help your cause?
JULIA
Sven Zoran and the League of Brotherhood and Unity have been a Godsend.
(beat)
Nevertheless, I don’t know if debt reduction is going to be enough—the world is ever changing.
(another beat)
Ideology, nationalism, and ethnic pride might be our downfall.
(another beat)
I believe it was your own President, Abraham Lincoln, who said, "A house divided against itself cannot stand."
Lee nods his head in understanding.
The song ends and Lee takes her back to her table. Her husband, who is sitting down, stands up as she approaches the table and he shakes Lee’s hand.
LEE
Thank you for sharing your lovely wife with me this evening.
JAKOV
Julia loves to dance; however, I am afraid I have. . . how is it you Americans say it. . . yes, two left feet.
(beat)
How are you enjoying the conference?
LEE
It has been most informative. I especially enjoyed your speech this afternoon. It is obvious you care greatly about your country.
Lee pulls out a business card.
LEE (continued)
The name is Lee Steadman. I work for IFF and am interested in doing a documentary someday.
Jakov takes the card and turns it over.
JAKOV
Mr. Steadman. Perhaps, someday.
LEE
Yes, perhaps.
(beat)
Well, I had better get back to my wife. It was nice meeting both of you.
Lee leaves and heads back to Amanda. He sits down next to her.
AMANDA
What do you think of Julia Ribar?
LEE
She’s hiding something. What, I don’t know.
(beat)
Maybe we should call Billy and have him do a thorough background check on her.
Lee and Amanda stand up and leave the ballroom.
Julia and Jakov nod at them as they walk past them and watch them leave. Jakov then grabs Julia’s arm, hard.
JAKOV
(angry)
What did you tell him?
JULIA
Nothing.
(beat; off his look)
Really, Jakov, I swear I told him nothing. . .
CUT TO
INT. LEE AND AMANDA’S HOTEL ROOM
Amanda is sitting on a sofa in the room, with her feet tucked underneath her. She’s watching Lee who walks over to a clock radio and finds a station playing soft music. A fire is burning in the fireplace and the lights are down low.
AMANDA
Isn’t it a little warm for a fire?
LEE
I’m setting the mood. Besides, it’s a gas fireplace—I set it on low.
AMANDA
(laughs)
You do not need to set the mood. You already got me.
Lee is not paying attention.
LEE
There, that should do it. . . no interruptions. . . no work. . . no family. . . just you. . . and me.
She pats the space next to her and Lee sits down. He pulls her close to him and they start making out on the couch.
THE CAMERA PANS THROUGH THE HOTEL ROOM AND ZOOMS IN ON THE FIRE BURNING IN THE FIREPLACE.
The audience hears soft giggles and sexy whispers. Then suddenly the music stops playing and we hear someone cough OFF CAMERA.
LEE
What the. . .
They look up and see Francine standing in front of them with a 'Cheshire' grin on her face.
FRANCINE
(eyebrows raised)
Now what was it you said yesterday about just being friends with your partner, Scarecrow?
(beat)
And Amanda, Dear. I thought you told me you and Lee broke up, and you were worried whether you did the right thing.
Lee and Amanda exchange nervous glances.
ANOTHER ANGLE
We see the back of Lee and Amanda’s heads as they look at Francine.
FRANCINE
Dr. Smyth is going to have your heads on a platter. You know the Agency frowns on fraternization among coworkers, especially partners.
She taps a manila envelope with her long manicured fingernails.
FRANCINE (continued)
This little tidbit of information will cost a lot more than a box of gourmet chocolates.
Lee and Amanda look at each other in total disbelief. They both have a pretty good idea what Francine is holding in her hand.
FRANCINE (continued)
Lee, you and I have been friends for a long time and I cannot believe you kept this from me.
(beat)
And Amanda. I know we have not always been close, but I thought over the past few months we were becoming friends. You both have really hurt me by not telling me about your relationship. And here I thought I was being a good person by telling you to stay away from Lee, because I honestly believed he would hurt you.
(another beat)
I don’t think I can ever trust you again.
Francine chokes back tears and turns on her heels, heading toward the door. She reaches the door, but not before she has finished saying her piece.
FRANCINE (continued)
One more thing. . . don’t quit your day job, because when it comes to acting, I can mop the floor with you two. Better keep doing what you two do best and catch the bad guys, because children. . . gotcha!!
Francine turns around and walks back to Lee and Amanda. They can’t believe she pulled the wool over their eyes with that performance.
FRANCINE (continued)
Congratulations, Lee and Amanda. I’m happy for you both.
OFF LEE AND AMANDA’S REACTION. . .
END OF ACT THREE
ACT FOUR
INT. MAJESTIC HOTEL HALLWAY – NIGHT
We see Julia walking down the hallway when she is suddenly grabbed and pulled into a corner where the ice machine and vending machines are. She is startled, but then relaxes when she recognizes who had grabbed her.
WIDEN TO REVEAL Sven pulls her close and kisses her passionately.
JULIA
Sven you scared me to death.
SVEN
I missed you.
JULIA
I missed you, too.
She is running her hands up his arm.
JULIA (continued)
Is everything set for tomorrow?
SVEN
Tomorrow we act.
JULIA
Good. Then tomorrow you and I can be together and that weak husband of mine will be nothing but a bad memory.
SVEN
That is where you are wrong, Dear. He doesn’t know it, but he will be a martyr for our cause. The best part is the evidence will all point to Mika Markivic as the murderer. Everyone will blame the Croatians for the Serb's death. . . and the Serbs will strike back.
JULIA
(shrugs)
Like you told me, you have your agenda and I have mine.
THE CAMERA PULLS BACK to reveal Francine who is pressed against the wall eavesdropping on the conversation.
SVEN (O.C.)
This calls for a celebration. Care to join me for a drink in the bar?
Francine moves quickly and grabs her service cart, pushing it through the hallway corridor. She nods at the couple as they walk by her. Glancing behind her shoulder, she quickly heads toward Sven’s room. She looks around the hallway and knocks on the door—room number 505.
FRANCINE
Room Service.
She then pulls out a key and opens the door and steps through with her cart and closes the door.
INT. SVEN ZORAN’S ROOM – NIGHT
Francine scans the main room and then enters the bathroom. She comes back into the main room and opens a few drawers, when suddenly she hears a voice.
SVEN (O.C.)
Can I help you?
Francine turns around quickly and puts her hand on her chest.
FRANCINE
Sorry, Sir. You gave me such a fright.
(beat)
I’m here to deliver your room service order.
SVEN
I didn’t order any room service.
FRANCINE
You didn’t order any room service?
SVEN
No, I did not.
FRANCINE
This is not room number 506?
SVEN
No, it’s room 505.
FRANCINE
I am sorry, Sir. I am new to the hotel and sometimes I mix up room numbers. Let me grab this cart and get out of your way.
Francine steps toward the room service cart and reaches toward her gun, which she has hidden on the bottom shelf of the cart. Sven is quicker and points a gun at her. Julia enters the room at the same time.
JULIA
Sven, what’s taking you so long? I thought you just were going to grab your coat. . .
(beat; loud)
What are you doing?
SVEN
I caught her snooping through my room.
FRANCINE
I don’t know what you mean. I told you I entered your room by mistake.
SVEN
Yes, you are correct. You did make a mistake.
(beat)
Get on the bed, now!
JULIA
What are you going to do with her?
(beat)
You aren’t going to use that? No one was supposed to get hurt.
SVEN
We can’t let her foil our plans. Just find me something I can use to tie her up. . . we’ll just detain her until after we kill Jakov.
JULIA
Then what?
SVEN
I don’t know. Let me think! All I know is we can’t afford any witnesses.
Sven motions to Francine to sit down on the bed and she complies. Keeping the gun trained on her, he searches the room service cart and finds her gun.
SVEN
(to Julia)
Still believe she’s just a hotel room service employee?
Julia hands Sven some rope. He begins to tie up Francine; we. . .
CUT TO
INT. LEE AND AMANDA’S HOTEL ROOM – NEXT MORNING
Sunlight begins to filter in through the drapes as THE CAMERA finds Amanda lying in bed on her side, sleeping. Lee’s arm is wrapped around her, holding her close. After a beat, Lee sits up slightly and kisses her cheek, moving down to her jaw and then her neck. Amanda’s eyes flicker open; she sighs contentedly and turns to face him.
AMANDA
Mmmm. Best wake-up call, ever.
LEE
I aim to please.
AMANDA
That you do.
She pulls Lee close to her and he lowers his mouth to hers and kisses her deeply. He rolls her over onto her back and the PHONE rings.
Amanda gives him a knowing look. Lee rolls back over to look at the phone in disgust and then answers it.
LEE
What?
BILLY (V.O.)
Sorry, Scarecrow. Was I interrupting anything?
Lee rolls his eyes.
LEE
What’s up, Billy?
BILLY (V.O.)
Have you heard from Francine this morning?
LEE
Um. No.
BILLY (V.O.)
She missed her check-in this morning.
LEE
That is not like Francine. Let me make a few inquires and I will get back to you.
Lee hangs up the phone and turns to Amanda who is now sitting up in bed.
AMANDA
What?
LEE
I don’t know. Might be nothing, but Francine missed her check-in.
He picks up the phone again and presses the ‘8’ button.
LEE (continued)
Room service? No, I don’t need to order anything this morning, but is it possible to talk to the restaurant manager? . . . Yes, I’ll hold.
RESTAURANT MANAGER (V.O.)
This is Tony Bavani. How may I help you?
LEE
Hello, Mr. Bavani. My name is Lee Steadman. My wife and I are staying in room number 312 and I have a question for one of your room servers. . . I believe her name is Francine.
RESTAURANT MANAGER (V.O.)
I’m sorry; Francine Redman is no longer employed at this hotel.
LEE
What? Why?
RESTAURANT MANAGER (V.O.)
I do not have patience for incompetent workers. She was supposed to deliver dinner to Mr. Wainwright in room 506 and he called last night, very upset his dinner never arrived. Why, what has she done now?
LEE
When she came to pick up our tray yesterday afternoon, I think I may have accidently left my watch on the tray. Has anyone turned one in?
RESTAURANT MANAGER (V.O.)
No, Sir.
(beat)
Would you like me to contact the hotel manager?
LEE
No, that will not be necessary. I am sure I just misplaced it.
(beat)
Thank you for your time, Mr. Bavani.
Lee hangs up and then dials another number.
AMANDA
Lee?
Lee holds up his finger telling her to hang on a moment.
LEE
Yeah, Billy. No one has heard from her since last night.
(beat: worried)
We will keep you informed.
Lee glances over to Amanda. She has a worried look on her face; we. . .
CUT TO
INT. MAJESTIC HOTEL HALLWAY CORRIDOR – DAY
Lee and Amanda are walking down the hallway of the hotel.
LEE
Francine was supposed to have delivered a late night dinner to Mr. Wainwright’s room here on the fifth floor.
They both stand outside room number 506.
LEE (continued)
Room 506, correct?
AMANDA
(nods)
Right.
Lee walks down the hallway a little ways, looking at room numbers and then turns around to come back toward Amanda.
LEE
Amanda, who is in room 507?
She pulls out a guest list and searches the names.
AMANDA
Mr. and Mrs. Doug Stoneman.
LEE
And 505?
AMANDA
Sven Zoran.
LEE
Right. The community organizer.
(beat)
Damn, we have nothing to go on.
Amanda starts to walk down the hallway. Suddenly, Lee hears a faint sound. It sounds like light tapping.
LEE (continued)
Wait, Amanda. Do you hear that?
Amanda walks back toward Lee and listens closely.
AMANDA
Sounds like someone is typing.
Lee listens a little more intently.
LEE
That's Morse code.
(beat)
And it’s coming from this room.
Lee takes out his lock pick and picks the lock. He motions for Amanda to stand against the wall and he slowly opens the door. He enters the room with his gun drawn and a second later Amanda enters. They find Francine lying on the bed, bound and gagged. Her hands were tied behind her back, as well as her legs.
Lee continues to check out the room and bathroom verifying no one else is there. Amanda crosses over to Francine and unties her.
AMANDA
Francine, are you okay?
FRANCINE
Do I look okay? I was tied up and forced to lay on a hotel comforter. Who knows how many other people have slept on this comforter. Well, at least it is a feather down comforter.
Amanda rolls her eyes.
FRANCINE (continued)
Thank goodness for Charles Jourdan patent leather pumps. I was able to reach the footboard with my heel. I was hoping someone would walk by and recognize Morse code.
Lee comes back into the room and holsters his gun.
LEE
What happened?
FRANCINE
Sorry, Lee. I made a rookie mistake. I overheard Sven and Julia talking about killing Jakov and I came to check out Sven’s room. I really should have called for backup or let you and Amanda know what I was doing.
LEE
Wait, Julia? As in Mrs. Ribar?
FRANCINE
Yes, she and Sven are lovers. They plan on killing Jakov today, here at this hotel.
LEE
Call Billy. Let him know what is going down and that we need backup.
FRANCINE
Right.
She picks up the phone and Lee and Amanda head out of the hotel room and down the hallway as we. . .
QUICK CUT
INT. HOTEL LOBBY – CONFERENCE ROOM – DAY
Lee and Amanda come upon the conference room. They both scan the area looking for Jakov. They find his bodyguards standing near the back of the room. Lee approaches them and shows them his ID.
LEE
Lee Stetson, I work for the Agency. One of our agents overheard a conversation with Sven Zoran. He plans on killing your boss.
The bodyguards rush up to Jakov and lead him out of the conference room, flanking him on both sides. Lee follows close behind and sees Sven, who has seen the commotion. He dashes out a side door with Lee in hot pursuit.
EXT. OUTDOOR POOL
Both Lee and Sven run past other hotel guests and jump obstacles in their way.
ON SVEN
Sven looks behind him and sees Lee is gaining. He throws a resin table in Lee’s path.
ON LEE
Lee jumps over it with ease and sails toward Sven pushing him into the pool with Lee falling in also.
FULL SHOT
Lee grabs Sven as he makes it to the surface of the water and punches him. Sven is no longer a threat. Lee drags himself and Sven to the waters edge. Francine and Amanda help fish Sven out of the water.
FRANCINE
Now, place your hands behind your back.
She pulls out her cuffs as he complies and she clasps them around his wrists.
Amanda runs over to the pool to see if she can help Lee.
AMANDA
Oh, you're all wet.
He holds out his hand, but Amanda shakes her head.
AMANDA (continued)
I don’t trust you.
Lee raises an eyebrow. She grabs a skimmer and holds it out to him. He grabs it and gives it a gentle tug. Amanda falls into the water. Lee swims to her and pulls her close to him; he then dips his head down to give her a kiss.
AMANDA (continued)
Francine can see us.
LEE
Who cares?
He kisses her again.
FRANCINE
Get a room.
CLOSE UP LEE AND AMANDA
Both Lee and Amanda laugh and we. . . FREEZE FRAME.

EXT. IFF GEORGETOWN ENTRANCE – DAY
ZOOM INTO Q-Bureau window.
INT. Q-BUREAU – DAY
The scene opens and we find Lee sitting on the edge of his desk talking on the telephone.
LEE
That is great news. I will let Amanda know when she comes in.
Amanda enters. She places a grocery bag on her desk.
LEE (continued)
She is here now. Thanks, Billy.
Lee then hangs up the phone and turns his attention to Amanda.
LEE (continued)
That was Billy. The Yugoslavian government is grateful for stopping the assassination attempt and you and I have been invited to the embassy on Friday night for a special gala dinner.
AMANDA
Oh, my gosh. Whatever will I wear?
LEE
Let me worry about that.
AMANDA
Lee, really you don’t need to buy me a new dress.
LEE
No, I don't have to buy you a new dress. . . I want to buy you a new dress. Now, no arguments from you and how about a proper hello.
He holds out his hands and she steps into his embrace.
Lee then kisses the top of her head. She looks up at him and he lightly brushes the hair away from her eyes, caresses her cheek, and leans in for a kiss. The door suddenly bursts open and Francine enters.
FRANCINE
You two really need to learn to lock this door.
Lee and Amanda smile at each other.
AMANDA
Good-morning, Francine.
She steps out of Lee’s embrace.
AMANDA (continued)
I brought you something. It’s in the grocery bag on my desk.
FRANCINE
Bribery will not work, unless you brought me some of your double chocolate chip brownies.
Amanda smiles.
FRANCINE
You didn’t.
She opens the bag and squeals. She then takes out a brownie and takes a bite.
FRANCINE
Heavenly.
(beat)
You know, you two are the worst kept secret in the Agency. No one believes you are just partners. So why all the subterfuge?
AMANDA
To keep my family safe and we were afraid Dr. Smyth would not let us remain partners at work anymore.
FRANCINE
I can’t answer for Dr. Smyth, but I don’t think he is stupid enough to break up the best team at the Agency. And wouldn’t it be safer for your family if you were all living under the same roof?
(beat; sighs)
I promise to keep your secret for now, but I really think your points are invalid.
Lee and Amanda glance at each other. Lee then puts his arm around Amanda’s waist and pulls her close. Francine observes this and smiles.
FRANCINE
You two really do bring out the best in each other.
(beat)
But if you tell anyone, I will deny it.
Lee, Amanda and Francine share a laugh and we. . . FREEZE FRAME

END OF ACT FOUR
TAG
